Obituary of June M. Cooper
June M. Cooper (nee Himmelman)
98 of Bridgewater, passed away at the Mahone Nursing Home on Thursday, 14 March 2013. She was born on 7 June 1914 at Riverport, the daughter of Captain Enos F. Himmelman and Edith Himmelman (née Myra). She moved to Bridgewater at the age of 4 and following public school studied at the Maritime Business College. She first worked in Bridgewater, with lawyer Cyril Couglin and Rafuse Motors. She then worked with Canadian National Railways in Halifax during the war years and later in Bridgewater, and retired in 1953. June was married to Milton (Tip) Cooper of Musquodoboit who died in 1989. She was the last living of her siblings, infant brother James (died in 1906), a sister Pearl (1918), brothers, Bob (1989) and Henry (1990), and sisters Mary (2003) and Marguarite (2004). She is survived by niece Ann Gonzalez (and husband Frank), nephews John (and wife Helga) and Donald (and wife Edythe), and many great-nieces and great-nephews to whom she was as much a grandmother as an aunt. June was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling, but most of all she took pride in maintaining her family home in Bridgewater and a summer cottage on the LaHave River. Her house was always a welcoming place for family and visitors, and many visits turned into spontaneous stays for meals. The cottage on the LaHave River became a family gathering spot for Sunday barbecues, often also including visitors from a far. She was greatly committed to looking after her two aging sisters at home. Her energy, determination and communication skills were remarkable and made her excellent company for family and friends alike. The family extends heartfelt thanks to all of the women who helped Aunt June over the years at home, especially for the prolonged service of Beverley and Ann, and also to the staff of the Mahone Nursing Home over the past two years. Funeral service will be held on 2 p.m. on Thursday at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater and burial will be at the Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the South Shore Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice. On-line condolences can be sent to: www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
