Obituary of Nellie Sophia Benjamin

BENJAMIN, Nellie Sophia – Age 85, formerly of Berwick and East Dalhousie, passed away at Mountain Lea Lodge, Bridgetown, N.S. on February 15, 2025.

Born in Berwick on June 16, 1939, she was the daughter of William and Idella (Lohnes) Oickle and lived in East Dalhousie for many years before moving to Berwick, N.S. Throughout the years, she enjoyed knitting, especially “Phentex” slippers, gardening, reading, writing to pen pals and collecting photos of family members.

She is survived by her sisters, Ida Zinck of Lake Pleasant, Mary Legge of East Dalhousie, Arlene Oickle of Morristown; sister-in-law, Glenda Oickle of New Ross; she also leaves behind twelve nieces and nephews, as well as numerous great-nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her sister, Lois; brother, Albert; half-sister, Lily in infancy; brothers-in-law, Donald Zinck, Parker Tufts, John Legge & Harold Mosher.

A funeral service for Nellie will be held Saturday March 1, 2025, at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, New Germany, beginning at 1 pm, with Rev. Catherine Robar officiating. There will be no visitation by family's request. Private family interment will be held in St. Cyprian’s Cemetery, East Dalhousie. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Cyprian’s Anglican Cemetery, East Dalhousie, or a charity of choice.
