My sincere condolences to ‘Mom’, Nadia, and Jaye.
I first met Murph when he was refereeing one of my junior high games. I had no idea he was the Park View coach and he was there to spy a bit on the upcoming players. After thinking I’d just played the best game of my life, he came up to me, scratching his chin, and said “Well Abriel, I don’t know. It’ll take a lotta work, but I think we could do it. You’re pretty tall.” He was right. I was tall. And I needed a LOT of work. When I finally figured out who that ref was the following year, he was there to guide me and open the door to excellence through a long athletic career.
Murph became a friend of mine, and despite all my brooding teenage moods, he could still playfully give me a hard time. I respected that and I appreciated the way he could balance dedication on the court with his disarming nature in life. And though I was never able to stand up on those darn water skis, he was essential in helping me learn to stand tall in my life. Murph was extremely proud of his children, and forever lovingly devoted to ‘mom’. He will be missed.

Linda, Jay, and Nadia,
My sincerest condolences on Jack's passing. I first met Coach in elementary school in Mahone Bay when he coached my older brother Owen. From that point on I spent many an hour with him in the gym and also in the classroom. My fondest memory was our trip to Louisiana in 1979 when I was in grade 9. He and Mike V loaded us on a plane for a trip of a life time. He was a great guy and I will cherish the time that I spent with him through the years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Rest in peace coach, You have tought me so much not only on the court but in life. You instilled in me that hard work always pays off and nothing meets us half way. If you want something bad enough you need to work for it. I live by these rules and I have passed them on to my children.
Until we meet again love you always Coach.

I was one of the lucky students. I had the privilege to be in Mr. Murphy’s Health & Phys. Ed. class his first year at BJSH. He always took the time to chat, share a few laughs and genuinely was interested in all his ‘kids’….a teacher who made you feel special and was well admired. He continued to carry this trait well beyond the school years.
His impact on mine and many other former students lives will never be forgotten.
Linda, Nadia and Jaye, I’m so deeply sorry for your loss. He truly was one of the best.

I offer my sincerest condolences to Linda, Nadia and Jaye on the passing of their husband and father. I knew Jack for a long period of time, starting in 1966 at the inaugural.game of the Liverpool Basketball Festival when he scored the first basket of this lone-lasting tournament to the yells of No, No! Good Shot! by! his coach.
I reflect on how committed he was to all young people. Less we forget, he was more than a basketball coach; he was a dedicated teacher and a dedicated family man.
I remember as well that he and Linda took exchange students into their home and treated them with love and compassion and Jack diidn’t seem to go anywhere without them.
We have lost a good man.

Dear Murphy Family: It was my pleasure to know Jack at Park View Education Centre, where we were colleagues for eight years. He was kind, generous, funny and dedicated to helping his students - whether it was in the classroom, the gym, the field or on the basketball court. He managed to bring out the best in them, and encouraged and inspired them to be their best selves through words and by example. I haven't seen Jack in over 25 years, but he made such an impact on me that I can still see his big grin and hear his straight-from-the-toes laugh. He was very special and I'm deeply sorry for your loss.

Everyone has a ‘Jack’ story and I look forward to hearing some of them at his service. Having worked with him at PVEC for many years I got a lot of advice from him about how to coach basketball, kids and sports in general. He was a maestro as a coach and a mentor to me. I guess the best way to sum it all up was that he had pride from head to toe. Pride in himself, his family, his students, players, school, community, province and country. I heard someone say a while ago they believed that life after death was the echo you leave behind. Jack’s echo will reverberate forever.

We have been thinking of you so much since we heard the awful news about Jack.
Jack was such a nice man - always fun, thoughtful and kind. Many of David’s “basketball cronies” spent time at our house in Wolfville and Jack was definitely one of our favourites! Among other things, he regularly manned the barbecue during basketball camps. We can still picture him talking, flipping steaks and keeping the other coaches entertained!
We’re sending our deepest sympathy and hope your memories bring you comfort.

I had the privilege to meet Jack through basketball, first while an assistant coach at St.Pat’s and then Dartmouth High. I really enjoyed the coaches “meetings” where stories were shared and Jack could tell a story. I had the honour of seeing him in 2015 , I think it was when I brought Auburn to the PVEC Tournament. At half he came over to say hi and to remind me that if he was still coaching I would be losing, instead of winning. I am glad to have met him and my deepest condolences to his wife , children and family. Jim Bowes

Jack and I became friends many years ago when we worked the Friday night shift together at the Bridgewater IGA during our high school years. Both of us became educators and coaches and over the years we would run into each other, usually at some high school sporting event, and catch up on things and share a good laugh. Jack had a tremendous meaningful effect on the lives of the South Shore youths that he interacted with during his career. He was held in high regard by the many that knew him. I was very saddened to hear of his passing while vacationing and visiting a friend of mine . Please accept my sincerest condolences for a friend gone way too early.

Dear Linda, Nadia, and Jay
Please accept my sincere condolences at the passing of your husband and father.
Jack Murphy was a dedicated, enthusiastic, and charismatic basketball coach. He was colourful, entertaining and deeply appreciated by the community. He served as a role model for students and players by his work ethic and determination. His positive influence on the basketball court led many students to pursure successful careers. Jack knew that a competitive basketball programme required financial backing. He was always coming up with new schemes to raise money. He was tremendously skillful at motivating students to raise capital, whether it was a 50/50 draws, school canteen profits, packing bags at grocery stores, lottery tickets, bake sales, coke machine profits, the list goes on. Success breeds success and students and teachers alike were always amazed at Jack's prolific sport budgets and expenditures. I taught with Jack for 24 years and I will always remember him as a wonderful colleague and friend. Murray Barkhouse

The basketball on the court is so poignant of Jack's life during his teaching time at the various schools. I don't think there is a student, baller, teacher, anyone who hasn't been touched by Jack's sense of love for the sport, his students, teams, co-workers etc. I watched a lot of ball games coached by Murph where we won (when I attended Centre) or Mahone Bay handed us a nice defeat. Murph then moved to PVEC and had excellent success there. The banners on the walls are proof. The memorial at PVEC is there for all to read and realize what kind of a great guy Murph really was.
May all the memories you have bring you joy. Murph was definitely a one of a kind.
