Obituary of John Oxley Stewart Maclean
Maclean, John Oxley Stewart, Green Bay transitioned at Hillside Pines Home for Special Care on March 12, 2025. Born in Halifax on June 13, 1943. He was the only son of the late Lorna (Hogg) and Russell K. Maclean of Halifax. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dawn (Marshall) Maclean, Green Bay; daughters, Tracey Warwick (Bill Oakley), Dartmouth and Sarah Livesey (Robert Livesey) Bridgewater; grandchildren, Ryan Warwick (Lindsey Harnish), Bedford; Adam Oakley, Dartmouth; Nora and Ava Livesey, Bridgewater.
Also surviving him is his sister Heather E. Maclean of North Sydney as well as his brother-in-law, Ross Babin (Angela) of Tatamagouche and his children who were very special grandchildren, Kate Babin (Sam) and children Kaden, Emery, Claire and Benjamin and Joel Babin (Megan) and their children Marshall and Charlee.
Brothers-in- Law, Jack Marshall, Mt. Uniacke and his children James Marshall (Mariann); children, Sam, Jack, Annalee and Luke Marshall (Stephanie); children, Harper, Lucy and Lauren Marshall (Kim).
Predeceased by his sister-in -law, who was like a daughter to him, Margaret A. Marshall Babin and sister-in-law, Dawn Gerrior Marshall, brother-in-law David W, Marshall.
Educated in Halifax, John was employed by Maritime Tel and Tel, Niagara/IAC and for the remainder of his career by The Bank of Nova Scotia where he held several positions throughout Nova Scotia. Active in community affairs, he was past Chairman of the Yarmouth Downtown Business Development Association; member of the Shelburne School Board; the North Sydney Business Improvement District Commission; the North Sydney Rotary Club and the Sackville Chamber of Commerce. He was a lifetime member of the United Church of Canada and in the communities where he lived over the years, he served in various positions including Elder, Steward, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher, Choir and Chair of Committees.
Dedicated to the hobby of Numismatics, he was a member of the Halifax Regional Coin Club (Honorary President), Atlantic Provinces Numismatics Association and Atlantic Provinces Wooden Money Collectors Association, Canadian Paper Money Society, Cape Breton Coin Club, Sou’wester Coin Club and Canadian Numismatic Association. For several years, he organized and directed Coin Shows.
He appreciated the family cottage and home in Green Bay, enjoying the many pleasures that Petite Riviere and the surrounding areas offered in abundance.
A Celebration of Life will be held 1:30 p.m., Saturday, April 12 in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Pastor Dana Pardy and Rev. Vivian Moores officiating. There will be a reception immediately following the service. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to the M.S. Society, Feed Nova Scotia, The Petite Riviere Cemetery Company or a charity of choice.
