Dear Sharon and Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Jim’s passing, and I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to you and your loved ones during this profoundly difficult time.
It is hard to put into words the impact Jim has had—not just on the HOPE Program, but on the lives of so many bereaved military families across this country. I will always hold close the memory of that first consultation day, when a small group of families came together to share their stories and envision something new. It was an intense and emotional day, but Jim brought a sense of calm and hope into the room that I will never forget.
Even in the shadow of unimaginable loss, Jim carried himself with grace, humility, and a steadfast commitment to service. He didn’t just participate—he led. From the very beginning, he exuded the desire to turn his own heartbreak into a lifeline for others. His openness, his lightness, and his deep compassion were the cornerstone of what would eventually become the HOPE Program. Without question, he was its backbone.
Jim’s journey through grief—and his unwavering choice to honour Paul by walking alongside others in their darkest moments—was nothing short of extraordinary. As was your role, Sharon. You were always there by his side, supporting his work, sharing your strength, and allowing his dedication to shine even more brightly. The legacy you both leave behind is one of love, courage, and community.
As Jim once shared: “When I saw on the news that a Canadian soldier had been killed in Afghanistan, I thought, ‘My son is serving there… but so are 2,000 other Canadian soldiers. The odds are that it isn’t him.’” That day, he lived through a parent’s worst nightmare—and so did you, Sharon, along with the rest of your family. The weight of that loss is unimaginable. And yet, in the 18 years since, Jim managed to transform that pain into purpose—honouring Paul’s memory by helping other families find healing, strength, and hope.
Jim will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the HOPE Program, and in the hearts of every family he comforted along the way.
With warmth and enduring respect,
LCol (Ret’d) Stéphane Grenier CM, MSC, CD, LLD

Stéphane, Thank you so much for your kind words. Jim had the most admiration and respect for you. I believe you both shared a very special bond. Jim always believed strongly in the mission and the men and women who volunteered to go for the right reasons, but above all he was so proud of Paul. Again, Stéphane, you are a very special person and both Jim cherish ed your friendship. I thank you from my heart.

The Davis family to me is like a successful and powerful institution.
Jim’s Dad Paul and my Dad “CD” started a business together as friends, raised their families together and created a memories that are too many to name.
Jim grew to become an amazing influencer in every aspect of his life’s efforts.
Sharon and family, you will always have Jim with you in so many ways.
Liz, my dear friend and “sister”…we forge on!

Dear Sharon and all of Jim’s family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of Jim’s passing. It was truly a privilege to be part of the HOPE Group alongside him, he was a truly wonderful person. His kindness, dedication, and resilient strength touched everyone who had the chance to work with him.
I will never forget Jim or the positive impact he had on all of us, especially the many bereaved military families he supported over the years. One memory I hold dear is how he would join Carl and Robert in leading the blessing before each HOPE Group dinner; a moment that always brought comfort and connection, and one I will always cherish.
I know that over the past 19 years, Jim found healing and fulfillment through his work with HOPE and helped so many families. He brought heart and sincerity to everything he did, and his presence will be deeply missed within the group and beyond.
Please know that my thoughts are with you.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Claudia Gaudreault

To Jim’s family, I am deeply saddened by the loss of Jim and would like to offer you my deepest condolences in this incredibly difficult time. I had the privilege of working closely with Jim on the development of the HOPE Program. Over the years I've came to deeply value the bond we've shared. The moments of sadness, laughter, the collaborative spirit, and the authentic conversations were so special. Jim has always been kind with a supportive presence, and I had the opportunity to experience both his professionalism and his friendship. I will always remember how he had a way of illuminating any room with his smile, his naive humour never failed to lift our spirits. He had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcome and at ease, bringing smiles to their faces even in the most difficult moments.
Sharon, Craig and Laura, please know that our thoughts are with you as you grieve the loss of such a special person. We are there for you and will always honour the legacy he has left in our hearts and in the work that we continue to do together. I will miss you Jim.
With deepest sympathy,

Jim and I were members of Burns Lodge #10, which met in Halifax. In 1998 he was head of the lodge (ie the Worshipful Master), while I was secretary.
As we say in Masonry at sad times like this, "May it be your portion to hear from the Great Architect of the Universe, ' Well done good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things; I will make you ruler over many.' "

My deepest sympathy to Sharron and all Jim's family. I was shocked to hear of Jim's sudden death. I met Jim and Sharron 17 years ago during a military Next of Kin trip to Afghanistan. After that I joined the HOPE group along side Jim and our other fallen soldier dad, Carl Wilson. We kind of became the Three Amigos, in our loss of our sons, and our work within the HOPE group. I loved to tease Jim about his politics and remenisce about our Afghanistan trip. A great guy and a great Canadian.

Growing up we definitely enjoyed some of our friends’ parents more than others, Jim was always a favourite. His humour was dry, and he always gave us a hard time from a loving place. I will never forget chasing Hunter across the school playground with him and Craig when our dogs got loose while on a play date. I think of Jim often, whenever I pass by the house in Bridgewater or see an Alaskan Malamute or a jeep. He meant a lot to all of us who grew up with Craig and Laura.

I met Jim in 2014 after joining HOPE. His character and personality always lit up the room and any conversation being held. He was compassionate and supportive to me as a new member and all the group of HOPE. His stories and his humour were an important part of the times we all were together. He was never afraid to ask questions or to question the answers whether it was from the members of the group or guest speakers or representatives from CAF. Geoff and I are send hugs and prayers to Sharon and all the family. I am shedding a tear as a type this and whenever I think of their loss but I know JIm will be organizing the troops in heaven and reminding them they will never be forgotten. God Bless you Jim. Your honesty, your smile, even your ubiquitous pipe will be greatly missed. From Geoff and Bonnie Rushowick we will remember
