Obituary of Walter Willi Wegemer
Walter Wegemer was born on August 15, 1934, in Frankfurt, Germany. Sadly, he passed away on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025, in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, Canada at the age of 90.
Walter came to Newfoundland after World War 2. He did not speak a word of English. Still, over time, he learned the language and began a long and interesting life that included careers as a carpenter, in construction and with the Canadian Coast Guard.
He loved talking to people, watching soccer, Porsche cars, pizza and the occasional cold beer. Since his death, people who have known him for years, and those whom he only recently met, have shared their sadness since they have learned that he has passed because he was such a kind and lovely person. Walter was deeply loved for the stories he shared—tales from his life, full of humor, wisdom, and experience. He will be remembered for these unique and special stories.
He leaves behind his son, Peter, and daughter-in-law, Jan. He loved his wife, Carol Ann, deeply and called her his "buddy". He was never the same after her death nearly eight years ago. Though he wasn’t certain what came after this life, we hope that Pop has found peace and a joyful reunion with his beloved wife.
Walter loved Newfoundland and Newfoundlanders. Although he was born in Germany and retired in Nova Scotia, he always said that he considered himself to be a Newfoundlander. As per his wishes, his ashes and those of his wife, Carol Ann, will be laid to rest in Topsail, Newfoundland.
A special thank you to Walter’s brother-in-law, Robert Dawe and his friend and neighbor, Beverley Langley, who were both supportive and helpful to Walter over the last few years.
At his request, those wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to their local SPCA. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater where online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com
