Obituary of Eric James Hirtle

HIRTLE, Eric James - Age 86, of Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co., passed away Wednesday, June 25 2025, at Mahone Nursing Home, Mahone Bay, where he had been residing. Born March 28, 1939, he was a son of the late Percy and Lillian (Wentzell) Hirtle, formerly of LaHave Island.

He is survived by his sister, Shirley; brothers, Leon, and Frank (Judy); nieces, Trudy (Mike) and Felicia (Matt); great-nephews, Ashtin (Sarah), Colby (Brooke) and Landon; great-great-nephews, Marcus, Everette; great-great-niece, Melissa; and many cousins.

He was predeceased by sisters, Elizabeth, Hazel and one in infancy; brothers, Delbert, Lester, Reginald, St. Claire, Lawson, Everette and Nelson; brother-in-law, Marcus.

Eric enjoyed his time with his friends in the Mahone Nursing Home, and at Ridgewood Assisted Living, Bridgewater. He was always quick with a joke and loved to poke fun at the staff; he enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his great nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was an avid supporter of the variety shows put on by the local fire departments and community halls. He was a volunteer with LaHave and District Fire Department for 30 plus years, he served his community with pride.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, July 19, 2025 in Sweeny's Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater. A private family interment will be held in Peaceful Hill Cemetery, West Dublin. In lieu of flowers, donations in Eric’s memory may be made to LaHave and District Fire Department, the LaHave Islands Marine Museum or a charity of choice.
