Obituary of Stephen Paul Saunders

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stephen Paul Saunders of Blockhouse, Nova Scotia, on August 3, 2025.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, he moved to Nova Scotia in 1986. Steve married Beverley Richardson in 1986, and we have been happily married ever since.

Steve was not only the love of my life and my superhero, but he was my Ironman, having completed 14 Ironman races, and countless marathons over the years. He represented Canada in triathlon in several different countries, always cheered on by me.

Steve’s other passion from childhood onwards, was chess, competing in chess at a Master’s level in several provinces.

Steve was a co-founder of the Bridgewater Triathlon Club, and the founder of the Bridgewater Chess Club. It brought Steve great joy to see new people joining and enjoying the things he loved to do.

Stephen worked as a chemist and microbiologist. He was also the Quality Assurance Manager at High Liner Foods.  He was one of the smartest people I’ve ever met.

Stephen is survived by his wife Beverley; stepson Guy Sack Tina; and siblings Bruce Saunders (Shu Qi), Janet Saunders (Jeff Oskam), Peter Saunders (Louise Pearn), Andrea Gaspar (Joselito Gaspar); and beloved nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by parents, Jim and Jean Saunders; and sibling Theresa Saunders (Grant Young).

Steve will always be remembered by his friends and family for his sense of humour, quick wit, and competitive spirit. Steve lived his life to the max – always up for a challenge.

At Steve’s request, there will not be a formal funeral, but we will have a Celebration of Life at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Canada in memory of a life well lived.

Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where online condolences can be left at www.sweenysfuneralhome.com
