Obituary of David Whitfield Baker
BAKER, David Whitfield – It is with profound sadness that we announce, in the wee hours of August 31, 2025, at the age of 84, David passed away peacefully at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater; Maddie, his wife of 62 years and their family were by his side.
Born in New Cumberland, on April 2, 1941, David was the son of the late Donald and Marion Baker. David was also predeceased by an older brother, Grant and brother-in-law, Bob Burns. He is survived by his wife, Maddie; daughters, Kim Mills (Chuck), Kelly Wentzell (Andy); sisters, Bernice Burns and Joan Wilkie (Robert), and sister-in-law, June (Winston) Joudrey; he also leaves to mourn numerous nieces and nephews. He treasured and adored his three grandchildren. David was known as “Puppy” to Kristen Lawrence (Nick), Kaitlyn Wentzell (Zack), and Brandon Wentzell. He was so proud of all of their accomplishments and loved them very much.
David met his sweetheart Maddie while finishing school. They married and settled in the small community of Conquerall Bank, where they remained for 56 years. Here they raised two girls and shared many good times with great friends and neighbours. David was an active member of the Conquerall Bank Fire Department for 50 years; rushing off every time the call came out to help someone in need, working garden parties, and most recently at 84 years old, helped to pick strawberries and work at the supper this summer. Some of David’s best days were spent camping. He was always the first ready to take on another campground with his bags packed and the trailer hooked on a Friday afternoon. David and Maddie were very active and travelled often, they shared many great stories and memories from all their trips.
David first worked on the Gypsum Boats but quickly found out he was not one for the sea life. His passion was cars and so he started working at Good Wear Treaders and then moved on to Rafuse Motors. He finished his career as the parts manager at Cole Ford Sales in Liverpool. David was not one to take it easy so in his retirement he opened his own business; Dave’s Kar Klean. This allowed him to keep active and most importantly keep out of mom’s hair. David also loved animals. He was raised on a farm and couldn’t wait for the Big-Ex to be in town. He could be found in the grandstands for all the pulls and often talked about when he was young and would sleep in the barns with the animals during exhibition week. David was also often seen at the rink cheering on the South Shore Lumberjacks as a season ticket holder. David worked hard to give his girls a wonderful life, he was a good and faithful husband and loved Maddie with all his heart. As a dad he was the best and no better Puppy could be found. Rest peacefully Dad, you will be missed.
As per David’s wishes there will be a graveside service for private family only. A public reception to Celebrate David's Life will be held from 2 - 4 p.m., Saturday, September 13, 2025, in the Conquerall Bank Fire Hall, 2228 Conquerall Road, Conquerall Bank.
