Obituary of Raymond Edward Slade
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Raymond (Ray) Edward Slade, 77, of Bridgewater, on September 12, 2025, at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born on June 24, 1948, in Lushes Bight-Beaumont, Long Island Newfoundland, he was the son of Newton and Evangeline (Burton) Slade.
Ray was born and raised in Newfoundland and spoke often of his love for his community and memories of playing hockey on the pond. He was very close to his siblings and spoke with admiration how they all took care of each other.
At the age of 22, Ray left Newfoundland and moved to Lunenburg with his wife, Emmie - with whom he would spend a loving 25 years - and his first child, his son Raymond Jr. Lunenburg would be where they would raise their 3 children and planted their roots on Montague Street. Ray came to Lunenburg to benefit from the booming fishing industry and that was his way of life for over 50 years.
Ray was known as a hard worker and genuinely nice person who would do anything for anyone. Ray was a neat freak who could take anything apart and put it back together. He enjoyed tinkering around the yard, working on his car and doing housing projects. Ray was a huge hockey fan and watched endless hours of NHL games. His favourite was watching his grandson Asher play, and was definitely a proud papa. He also listened to a lot of news and was always up for a good debate.
Ray was the absolute best grandfather. He adored his grandchildren and made sure they didn’t go without anything. He was so happy about his newest title of great grandfather and brought him so many smiles with his visits.
Ray had close relationships with his many nephews and nieces. He loved his afternoon phone calls, and his visits with his nephew Don were his favourite parts of his days.
Ray did so many great things in his life, but his love and legacy is definitely his family. He was loved more than anything and will be missed beyond measure especially by his daughter and son.
Raymond is survived by his children, Heather Ann Slade and Eric Slade, both of Bridgewater, NS; grandchildren, Jacadie (Carrie) Day, Greenwood, NS, Jolie Day, Grand-Falls, NL, Jaylyn Day, Mahone Bay, NS, and Asher Slade, Bridgewater, NS; great-grandson, Maverick Youden, Mahone Bay, NS; brother, Wilson Slade, Long Island, NL; as well as many special nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Besides his parents, Raymond was predeceased by infant daughter Kelly Slade; son, Raymond Slade Jr.; sisters, Josie Bromley, Effie Short, Hazel Newman; and brothers, Hayward Slade, Pierce Slade, Gloss Slade, Eric Slade, Fred Slade, Ed Slade.
There will be no services by request. Donations in Raymond’s memory may be made to the South Shore Regional Hospital ICU.
