Obituary of Roger Hill Crowther

Roger Hill Crowther - born on October 31, 1935, in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England, passed away peacefully from Alzheimer’s Disease at Ryan Hall on October 16, 2025. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Nora Crowther; his brother Ian, and his second wife, Mazie, who brought immense joy to his life during their 26 years together.

Roger’s academic journey began early, as he won a Choristers Scholarship to Durham Cathedral Chorister School from 1945 to 1949. He later received the Mellor Exhibitioner Scholarship in 1957 and the Lancashire University Scholarship from 1957 to 1960, culminating in a BA in English in 1960 and an MA in 1963 under the esteemed Prof. F.R. Leavis. His service with the RAF Regiment from 1955 to 1957 preceded a memorable interlude teaching English to a Countess’s son in Spain. Despite challenging economic conditions in England, Roger’s friend David Pigot generously provided airfare to Canada, where he taught senior English in Halifax and Armdale, Nova Scotia, creating lasting memories, including the humorous incident of his Mini Cooper mysteriously appearing on the school roof one Halloween.

In 1963, Roger joined the staff of St. Mary’s University, where he embarked on a fulfilling career that culminated in his appointment as a full Professor in 1997. A gregarious individual, Roger thrived in front of an audience, dedicating himself to teaching and inspiring students. He wrote radio dramas, television documentaries, and plays for Neptune Theatre, while also engaging in a successful partnership with Bill Brayley in the antique auction business. His charisma drew people to him, and he formed numerous friendships throughout his life. He enjoyed two wonderful seasons with the Canadian Antiques Roadshow, where he renewed old friendships and forged new ones.

In retirement, Roger settled in Granville Ferry, where he enjoyed entertaining afternoons with his snooker group. He is survived by his wife, Alison Smyth of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia; his son James (Minerva) of Guelph, Ontario; his daughter Emma and granddaughter Madeline of Kingston Upon Thames, England; his sister-in-law Celine Crowther in England; his first wife Christine Howard of New Maldon, Surrey, England; his brother and sister-in-law Bruce and Ruth Herridge and their son Christian of Mahone Bay, N.S.; and his foster child Catherine Boss of Victoria, B.C.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Shoreham Village in Chester, as well as Earth Angels and Ryan Hall in Bridgewater, for the exemplary care Roger received during his final years. Roger Hill Crowther will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and the indelible mark he left on those who knew him.  Cremation has taken place, and a private family service will follow.
