Obituary of John David Grant
GRANT, John David – 80. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their father, on December 29, 2025, in Mill Village. Dave was born on March 14, 1945, in Bridgewater, Queens Co., to the late John Simon Grant and Grace Ellen (MacLaren) Grant.
Dave was raised in Bridgewater and Moncton. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Geology. After developing a dislike of the bugs inherent to geological field work, Dave returned to Dalhousie University and earned a Diploma of Engineering in 1970. In 1973, Dave was conferred the degree of Bachelor of Engineering/Mining from the Nova Scotia Technical College. At 28, Dave began his career as a mining engineer, a career that would see him and his family move across three provinces. Dave worked at the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This was followed by employment at the Halifax Grain Elevator in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He retired from Continental Lime (now Graymont) in Faulkner, Manitoba. In his semi-retirement, Dave undertook mining engineer contracts and worked at his favorite hardware store, Home Hardware, in Ashern, Manitoba.
Above all, Dave was an audiophile. He loved his stereo. He collected vinyl and adored music. He was a life-long, devout fan of the New York Yankees, the San Francisco 49ers, the Boston Celtics and the Edmonton Eskimos, wearing respective jerseys enthusiastically for all games. He was a meticulous note-taker, often tracking game scores and wildlife sightings. He also enjoyed movies, golf and the occasional shot of Captain Morgan rum. Stand-up comedy was also a favorite. He will be fondly remembered for his quick wit, cheeky sense of humor and his deep hearted laughter.
Besides his parents, Dave was predeceased by his sister, Margaret Ellen Puckering.
Dave leaves to mourn his son, Scott (Gabrielle Durepos), Lucasville, NS; and nieces Erika (Jamie Ewing), Monica (Jay Ennis) and Jessica (Chris MacDonald) Puckering, ON.
Memorial service will be held Friday, January 9, 2025, at 2p.m. at Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Bridgewater, followed by interment at Crousetown Community Cemetery, Crousetown, Lunenburg Co. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dave’s memory to Souls Harbour Rescue Mission.
Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, where online condolences may be left at www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
