Carolyn and family,
Please accept my sincere condolences for the sudden and unexpected (to me) death of Mark. I was in shock when I read the email announcement.
Mark has been a wonderful neighbour since I moved here five years ago – bringing me tomatoes, zucchini and rhubarb from his amazing garden, as well as always being available to answer a question or lend a helping hand.
It's hard to imagine Westchester Village without him. But on my daily walks past your place, I can feel his spirit watching over us if I stop to listen.,
I love the picture you chose! It captures the twinkle in his eye that was so much a defining characteristic. I am pleased to have it as a remembrance.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
All the best,
Nancy

Dear Carolyn, Chris, Kelsey, and Family
Please accept our sincere condolences. Our thoughts are with you.
He will certainly be missed!
We will always have fond memories of Mark at family gatherings. The Power Brothers in the kitchen was always an entertaining event, but make no mistake, certainly good food to be had coming from it.
Glad that we got to see him in December at a family gathering once again and got to celebrate him as it happened to be his birthday.
Mark – May you Rest in Peace!

I was so sorry to hear of Mark’s passing. Sending my condolences and deepest sympathies to all his family. I had the pleasure of working with Mark at Dalhousie for over 20 years and I can say without a doubt that he was one the most capable and dedicated professionals I have ever worked with. He truly cared about Dalhousie’s students and staff and spent his career making sure they had a comfortable environment to work and learn. Stories of Mark’s appetite and love for food are legendary, and his co-workers still mention his name during lunches and events despite him being retired for the past 5 years. He will always be remembered fondly. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.

Having been next door neighbours for the past 35 years, Gloria and I enjoyed some good times with Mark, Carolyn and family. With the shock and sudden sadness easing somewhat, I can’t help but think about Mark’s passion for cooking and sailing. It was always a source of kidding and laughter, often at his expense. When we raced his J24 on Thursday and Saturday’s, the Power brothers were often aboard as well, and I think we would have done better if the lunches were left on the dock. To say it was plentiful, consideration to use the yacht club crane might have been helpful.
And when Gloria and I returned from trips to some interesting countries, his first question upon our return is “What did you have to eat?”. He was sometimes disappointed when we had to think about it.
To put his passion in perspective, where some guys would have a jackknife on their belt, I think he had a spatula and a pair of tongs in its place. Who else can say that your next door neighbour has an old fridge with a smokestack sticking out the top in the back yard.
Mark, wherever you are right now, I hope there is a plate of wings, a shrimp ring, and a glass of Gosling’s nearby. We’ll miss you my friend.
Steve

Hi Carolyn. We only met once, but I knew Mark very well. I want to send my deepest condolences to you. I first met Mark thirteen years ago when I became an employee at Dalhousie University. He took me under his wing right from the beginning. He was very kind to me and was always helpful in every way. We went out to many lunches and spent a lot of time together at work. I will deeply miss Mark, and I want you to know that he was a great man, and I know that you meant the world to him. May God bless his soul.

I was so very saddened to hear of Mark's passing. He was a neighbour of ours for almost twenty years and one could not have asked for a better person to share a community with. Mark was thoughtful and hard working and kind. He was well know for being a BIG foodie, inquiring nosily what was on the menu for a supper club meal. And able to sniff our homemade cookies from 5oo feet. I especially loved the salmon smoker he so proudly made from an old fridge, painting it grey to match the stone wall behind it. This trick didn't really work but one had to admire his creativity. I also have fond memories of the occasional evening sail on Mark's boat where he seemed so at home, surrounded by friends, free as a bird on the open water. Mark set a high standard for proud homeownership, spending hours on his ride on tractor, and annually keeping up with the exterior painting of his house by doing one side every year without fail. I admired this commitment. My now grown children and I acknowledge that Mark's presence in the neighbourhood made it an extra special place to grow up and for that we will always be grateful. I hope knowing how highly he was regarded helps bring some level of comfort to Carolyn, Chris and Kelsey in this time of such great loss.

I am so very sorry to hear of Mark’s passing.
For many years at Chester Yacht Club, I had the pleasure of seeing Mark coming and going — heading out to race or returning to the club after a day on the water. He was always so kind, always ready to lend a hand, and he had that mischievous smile that let you know he was enjoying life.
I will truly miss seeing him at the club.
My heartfelt condolences to the Power family.

Carolyn & Family;
I want you to know just how sorry I am to learn of Mark’s passing.
Growing up in HERRING COVE, I was always in and out of the Power household, as Kevin and I enjoyed many youthful adventures. Sailing, swimming, bicycling and just enjoy life in the great outdoors.
For over 20 years, a group of us buddies get together to re connect and get caught up with each other’s lives and enjoy a beer and a bite.
I coined the group - THE DEMPSEY’s DINE AND DASH.
This past December we gathered at the LIONS HEAD TAVERN, and reservations were made for 12 of us.
Kevin and 7 others arrived, and I warned the waitress to place us in a spot where we would not bother other patrons, as you can imagine our gang would be telling tales from years gone by and a few good jokes.
We all had tales of our various aches and pains, and I joked that I requested the isolation room . The waitress was very accommodating and joked that she even had their elevator put on reserve to get us back and forth to the downstairs bathroom.
Sadly four guys couldn’t attend, life always seems to get in the way.
I tell you about this get together, because that is how I will forever remember Mark. Whenever we ran into each other I would hear him yell hey “ Mikey “ and his laughter and grin . He was full of joy and life.
His passing will leave a huge void in all of your / our lives, but his jest for life and the friendship that he shared with all of his HERRING COVE friends will keep his memory alive.
Please know that you all are in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincere condolences,
Pam & Michael ( Mikey) SPEARNS
