Obituary of Phyllis Marion Lohnes
LOHNES, Phyllis Marion - After a brief illness, Phyllis Marion Lohnes passed away at the age of 101, on April 5, 2026, in Halifax. She was born on September 20, 1924, in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia to Norman and Amy (Silver) Mulock.
Phyllis was the second of four children: Evelyn, Edward and Norman. Phyllis trained at the Grace Maternity Hospital in Halifax, where she worked after graduation. She married Murray Lohnes on October 30, 1946. They traveled coast to coast across Canada during his career with the Armed Forces. On their return to Halifax, Phyllis resumed work at the Grace Maternity Hospital, in the Case Room. After Murray’s retirement in 1971, they settled in Upper LaHave, Nova Scotia next to her childhood home.
Phyllis lived at Northwood (Halifax Campus) in her final three years. Northwood was home, where she was happy to join many of the activities, including Bocce Ball, Bingo and Newfie Night. A ferocious card player, Phyllis played cards every day. Her last bridge game was only weeks before her death. From Phyllis’ arrival at Northwood, to her final days, the care, professionalism and advocacy shown by every staff member was remarkable and appreciated.
Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, siblings; son-in-law, Tom Leahey; and grandchildren, Michael and Jamie. She is survived by her daughter, Marion; granddaughter, Keya; and sister-in-law, Joan Mulock.
No memorial donations. A Public Graveside service for Phyllis will be held June 26, 2026, in St. Matthews Cemetery, 13055 Hwy 3, Upper LaHave, beginning at 10:30 AM.
