Obituary of Gary Reid Russell

RUSSELL, Gary Reid – Age 73, New Germany, Lunenburg Co., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.

Born in New Germany, he was a son of Edgar Ray Russell, New Germany, and the late Pearl Winnifred (Ernst) Russell.

Gary’s career spanned over 35 years, after completing his education in masonry and brick laying, and working in Halifax for a few years, he returned to New Germany and created Russell’s Brick Laying which he owned and operated, having only retired five years ago.

Gary was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 102, New Germany. Gary loved sports of all kinds; he enjoyed bluegrass jams while camping with his Bluegrass Family. Gary always enjoyed attending the Community Café in New Germany on Thursday’s. He especially loved Maggie, his companion dog.

Surviving are his father, Edgar; siblings, Rona Russell, Deborah (Rick Harlow) and Wade Russell (Donna Robar), all of New Germany; nieces and nephews, Gary Mailman, Shelley Mailman, Jordan Russell, Shelby Russell; great nieces and nephews, Hayden Robar, Talesse Rawding, Autum Mailman; great-great niece and nephew, Leo Brigley and Isabel Brigley.

Besides his mother, Pearl, he was predeceased by his common law partner and soulmate, Lyda Rose Herget.

Visitation for family and friends will be held from 1-3 p.m., with Words of Love, Support and Remembrance offered by Rev. Catherine Robar at 2 p.m., on Sunday, August 16, 2026, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 Highway 10, New Germany. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
