Obituary of Fred Douglas DeLong

Fred Douglas DeLong It is with saddened hearts that we the family of Fred Douglas DeLong, age 93 of Barss Corner, Lunenburg Co., announce his passing at the Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany, on Sunday, November 20, 2016. Fred was born in Barss Corner on October 22, 1923 and was the son of the late Fred Carmen and Ethel Celeste LaBelle (Hirtle) DeLong. In his younger years Fred worked with his father in the family business and continued running his own family farm. He also worked for DeLong’s Farms for 25 years. Fred was a very active member of Epworth United Church, New Germany where he was a past elder, choir member, worked with the Board of Stewarts as well as being a member of the New Germany and Area Men’s Choir which he thoroughly enjoyed. Fred was also actively involved in the Barss Corner Community Hall and held the position of treasurer for many years. He received recognition for his service to the community of Barss Corner. He was a club card holder with the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 102, New Germany where he enjoyed playing darts. It would be difficult to find a more loyal New York Yankees baseball or Toronto Maple Leafs hockey fan! Fred was a kind friend and a gentleman to all that he met. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Dorothy Mae (Emino); daughters, Barbara (Dwight) Grimm, Prospect; Catherine (David) Rhodenizer, Barss Corner; grandsons, Shawn (Nadine) Grimm, Dartmouth; Todd (Linda) Grimm, Riverview; Ryan (Francine) Rhodenizer, Middle Sackville; Jonathan (Allie), Rhodenizer, New Elm; great grandchildren, Evan, Bryce and Rylie Grimm; Owen, Gracie and Leigh Rhodenizer; kind and caring sister, Judith Mader, Barss Corner and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Carmen and George. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 4895 route 10, New Germany. There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, November 25 in Epworth United Church, Rev. David Lutes officiating. A reception will follow in the church’s McFadden Hall. Burial in Barss Corner Community Cemetery will be at a later date. Family flowers only, donations may be made to the Barss Corner Community Hall, Epworth United Church or New Germany and Area Medical Center.
