Obituary of James "Jim" Frederick Harvey

HARVEY, James “Jim” Frederick – Age 76, of West LaHave. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Jim Harvey on October 20, 2023, in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, with his family by his side. Jim was born in Moncton, NB on May 21, 1947, and spent his formative years in Goose Bay, Labrador.

Jim joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1966 at the age of 19 and served with the Force for 31 years, until his retirement in 1997. He then went on to teach Policing at Success College in Lower Sackville, NS.  Jim acquired his Inshore Captains papers and could be found most days on the LaHave River conducting boat tours for the Lighthouse Motel and Cottages.  Jim’s passion in life was being on his boat with his family and friends, whether it was the Sable Light at Oak Island Marina, or on his pontoon boat along the LaHave River. Jim was happiest with a drink of rum in hand, good company, and the sun in his face. He could also be found telling a tale or two with the boys at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24, where he was an active member since 1973.

Jim is survived by his loving family, wife, Jacki Harvey (nee Johansen); daughter, Julie (Cindy); son, Jason (April); stepsons, Corey and Jay Martin; grandchildren, Kalin Baker and Keigan Harvey; great grandson, Myles; sister, Janice Newhook (Al); special grampy to Dante, Connor and Casey; many nieces and nephews, and his 1st mates Skipper and Jaxon. He was predeceased by his parents, Vance and Margaret Harvey and 1st wife, Jill Andrews.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York Street, Bridgewater, at 11:00am on Thursday, October 26th, officiated by Rev. Willis Ott. Private family interment will be held in Pleasantville Cemetery immediately following the service, and a public reception will be held upstairs at the Bridgewater R.C.L. Branch 24, 78 Churchill St., from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Please join us to celebrate knowing Jim, with family and friends. Donations to a charity of choice in his name, or flowers are welcome. Arrangements are entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, 35 York St., Bridgewater, where online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Solomon, Dr. Detoit, and the 3rd floor medical staff at the South Shore Regional Hospital, for their support and compassion during this difficult time. A special thanks to nurse Cindy and Jim’s dear friends who helped see him through this brief illness. Sail on Jim…
