I was saddened to read of Steve's death. It brought back many fond memories of working with him at the Department of Education and the Mathematics Teachers Association where he gave so freely of his love and expertise in mathematics. He was truly a role model and mentor to many mathematics teachers. All his family should be so proud of the contribution he made to education.

Grade 9, first geometry class...lines intersect...a+b=b+c...a=c. How many times did he teach that enlightening but simple math?! What many of us didn't understand until many years after graduation is that he taught us with enthusiasm, and more importantly, he showed us students that he cared. At the 1988 reunion, we had a chuckle that he could still "beat me up". We couldn't decide whether he was 220 or 225 when he taught us in Grade 9!!To echo many others, he taught us more than math. Easily, he was a great teacher. Deepest sympathies to his family.

I was saddened to read Mr. Czapalay has passed away. Please accept my most sincere condolences.
I read with interest his obituary. I was surprised that it was not mentioned that he had taught school in Springhill. Mr. Czapalay was my grade 5 teacher in the 1953-1954 school year. I still have my report cards. He was an excellent teacher & was the first male teacher I had up to that point.

I may not have been good at Math but with Mr. Czapalay as my teacher, it was my favourite class. Mr. Czapaly brought enthusiasm, knowledge and humour to his lessons. His stories of growing up in a Nova Scotia mining town were filled with humour and poignant lessons. Hudson High School is a long way from the coal mines of Springhill. He managed to convey the hardship of a miner's life and the importance of education. He was not only a whiz at Math but also a grammarian and philosopher. Pity the poor student who asked, " Sir, could you solve an equation?" His answer was "Of course I can. The real question is whether I will or not". Along the same vein, he used to brush the chalk dust from his jacket and wonder if teaching really was a cleaner job than working in a coal mine. I am grateful to have been a student of Mr. Czapalay.

He loved math so much that he gave up recesses, lunch hours, and time after school to turn this math hater into a math lover. If you put forth 100% in math, he returned 200%. That is how I remember "Czap". My condolences to his family.

Steve was my inspiring, skilled, and very tolerant Grade 8 teacher many years ago in Springhill. He will, for me, remain forever young, vibrant and handsome.

Steve Czapalay was just beginning his teaching career at Hudson High School as I was completing my time there as a student. I was never in any of his classes that I can recall, but my Mother, Mildred Maclean, who taught many years at the school, was a big fan of Steve's. She was particularly fond of his passion and dedication to his craft, something she often found lacking in new, young teachers. I send my sincere condolences to all the members of his family. He was a fine man of whom you can be justly proud.

Steve,a man I remember fondly from Hudson High.Math was always my nemesis and without his help and encouragement I doubt I would have been able to get to post secondary levels. My fondest memory was my very first teacher's convention that was held at The Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. He was at the bar with Mr.Burton, when I walked in.He knew I was not "legal" to drink but he never said a word.We had great chats and as hard as I tried,I could not call him Steve, only sir.I was still in awe of him from high school.i am so saddened to hear of his passing but seeing the obituary certainly brought back fond memories of our lives having crossed paths so many years ago.Fondest regards to all the family.Janet Delo(Sorensen)

Mr Czapalay taught me in Grade XI and XII in the 70's and made the study of mathematics enjoyable. I attribute my love of the subject to his methodology. At 62, I will endeavor to study calculus at the University of Toronto but I know there is no teacher quite like him. My condolences to the family.

Mr. Czapalay was the only math teacher that ever taught me anything. Before his class and for a lifetime afterwards I was challenged by mathematics. It has been 30 or 31 years since he taught me, and I still remember he explained what a parabola was by throwing a chalk-board eraser across the classroom. He had an amazing way of connecting with his students and definitely had a calling to teach. My sincere condolences to his family, especially my former classmate Yvette. God bless.

Sending my sincerest condolences to each of the family. Mr. Czapalay was a great teacher, and I am very thankful for the opportunity to have been one of his many, many students. There are many lessons throughout life, some we even learn in the classroom. May you each hold your good memories very close and know that he was a blessing to so many.
