I reached out to Mike via email after seeing his video with Chris Ulmer late last year. He responded in early July of this year, and we emailed back and forth for the rest of July until the 29th when he said he wasn't feeling well.
In the short time I had to get to know him, I quickly learned that he had a great sense of humor, a love for good 80s music and a wonderful connection to animals. He also had a very positive attitude despite everything he had to deal with, and it was clear he loved his family.
I have donated to the Alstrom International Society in his memory.

To the family of Michael--
I never met Michael but I know members of his loving family, Cheryl, Sandra and Pauline. I learned of his passing when visiting them this week. Pauline showed me the photo of Michael with his dog and it is such a beautiful memory for all of you. I wish you peace knowing that Michael lived a beautiful and heartfelt life. I would have liked to have known him.

Dear Nancy and family, We were all so saddened to hear about Mike. We talk about Mike often and reminisce about meeting him that first time with Megan at Frank and Norma's house. Mike was only three years old and Megan was only two at the time. How Mike entertained us with his keen wit at the Alstrom's reunion and how he touched our hearts when he came to Megan's funeral 15 years ago. He was an old soul and such a caring young man. He will be missed but he certainly left his finger print on this world. I send my condolences to you and your family on the passing of your son, Michael. Although I do not see you for years at a time, one thing I always will remember,is what a great mom you are. In fact, if I could do my life all over I wish you could be my mom, Nancy. The love you demonstrated to your own kids was certainly an example to me when I had mine. I am very sorry to learn of Michael's passing. He was a wonderful, funny, bright person who refused to be limited by anything. I remember first encountering the force that was Michael when he was a feisty toddler on 7South at the IWK, running around in duct-taped yellow and white pajamas and seeking to break out of his room at every opportunity. He was a character, to be sure, then - and always. That determination and the love and support of his family allowed Michael to defy expectations and grab life.

My condolences to Nancy, Matt and the whole family.
I have so many great memories of Mike coming to the house to beat me at jeopardy or any other board game of his choosing. He would always cheat - of course.
My first meeting with Mike introduced me into the world of the "river" wrestling move - I should have known not to trust Matt and Mike when they were together. "Just get a little close to Mike, Rob, it doesn't hurt!"
Mike will be sorely missed. I only wish, I had called more or emailed more or anything more. That's on me Mike.
I will see someday soon and I will let you win (again) at any game you want.
