Obituary of Marie Nauss

Alice “Marie” (Demone) Nauss, 95, Bridgewater.  Born in First South on July 28, 1923, Marie was raised in Lunenburg and returned there in her final year, passing away peacefully in Harbour View Haven on February 2, 2019.  Marie was predeceased by her parents, Capt. Harry and Gertrude (Demone) Demone; husband Clarence Nauss; sisters Isabel Varner and Lucy Barry.

She is survived and sadly missed by daughter Sharon Nauss-Hughes (Mike Hughes), Italy Cross; step-granddaughter Nikki (Greg) Nielsen, great-grandchildren Emmy, Hudson and Hattie, Escondido CA; brother Earl Demone, Martin’s Brook; many nieces and nephews. Marie was a pretty, independent working girl in the late 40’s, intent on staying single - and then she met Clary. That romance turned into a loving marriage that lasted over 50 years. Moving to Bridgewater, she became a devoted wife and mother who took pride in her home and supported her husband in his business and community endeavours. She enjoyed needlework, ceramics, antiques and decorating, but she had a special talent for cooking and entertaining. Their large circle of friends enjoyed many social gatherings at the house in town and the cottage at Blystone Lake with great food, music and laughter, good times… They travelled to Florida in the winters of their middle years, a place to unwind and make new friends. Life changed dramatically when Clary passed away in 2002; Marie made the best of it, caring for her dog Brandy, chumming around with sister Lucy, and spending time with her daughter and family in the Valley. She eventually accepted the assistance of caregivers, allowing her to stay in her own home until her 94th year. Our family was blessed and grateful for Michelle, Marion, Sue, and most of all for Evelyn, who was extraordinarily dedicated and dearly loved by Marie. As physical challenges mounted and memory diminished, Mom remained stylish, funny and spirited, but in the end, she was ready to rest and reunite with her beloved husband. We will say good-bye with a simple graveside service at Brookside Cemetery in Bridgewater at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, Pastor Paul Jensen officiating.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Alzheimer’s’ Association of NS or charity of your choice.
