Mr. Gray had a profound impact on my life. It was because of his encouragement and belief in me that I went to Mount Allison, later did a MA in Education and subsequently became a post-secondary educator. I loved his sense of humour and kindness. Sincere condolences to the family. May he rest in peace. Lorri Trenholm-McLeod

Dale had a wide array of literary references that he used to stimulate new thought in students caught in a postmodern state of aimlessness. This speech by Ulysses in Shakespeare's "Troilus and Cressida" was perhaps his favourite:
The heavens themselves, the planets and this centre
Observe degree, priority and place,
Insisture, course, proportion, season, form,
Office and custom, in all line of order;
And therefore is the glorious planet Sol
In noble eminence enthroned and sphered
Amidst the other; whose medicinable eye
Corrects the ill aspects of planets evil,
And posts, like the commandment of a king,
Sans cheque to good and bad: but when the planets
In evil mixture to disorder wander,
What plagues and what portents! what mutiny!
What raging of the sea! shaking of earth!
Commotion in the winds! frights, changes, horrors,
Divert and crack, rend and deracinate
The unity and married calm of states
Quite from their fixure! O, when degree is shaked,
Which is the ladder to all high designs,
Then enterprise is sick! How could communities,
Degrees in schools and brotherhoods in cities,
Peaceful commerce from dividable shores,
The primogenitive and due of birth,
Prerogative of age, crowns, sceptres, laurels,
But by degree, stand in authentic place?
Take but degree away, untune that string,
And, hark, what discord follows! each thing meets
In mere oppugnancy: the bounded waters
Should lift their bosoms higher than the shores
And make a sop of all this solid globe:
Strength should be lord of imbecility,
And the rude son should strike his father dead:
Force should be right; or rather, right and wrong,
Between whose endless jar justice resides,
Should lose their names, and so should justice too.
Then every thing includes itself in power,
Power into will, will into appetite;
And appetite, an universal wolf,
So doubly seconded with will and power,
Must make perforce an universal prey,
And last eat up himself.

Mr Gray was one of my favourite teachers at ARHS in the 90s. He introduced me to a number of amazing Canadian authors, could possibly have bored me a bit talking about ancient philosophers, but always led an engaging and inclusive classroom. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to learn from him.

English, and Western Philosophy, two subjects Mr. Gray taught me in high school in the early 1990s. Many thoughtful conversations in the high school library about social issues, current events, and personal endeavors. Beyond being an engaging and passionate teacher (for those willing to be an engaged student) Mr. Gray was an unofficial guidance counselor, offering welcomed advice around academics, future goals and personal challenges.
Personally I'm in debt to Mr. Gray for his help in steering me in the right academic direction when my university plans dissolved around me after my first year. He encouraged me to continue to pursue a higher education, and to find courses I was interested in, and keep moving forward. I'll always remember the conversations we had around this and other issues a young man like myself, at the time, might be dealing with. With his guidance and good word I continued and completed my university degree, and I know his influence had a positive impact on my life. There are many people who I have encountered so far in my journey who have made a lasting impression on me, and Mr. Gray is one of those people.
Thank you sir for the time you took out of your day to have a positive impact on my life (and countless others I suspect). Whatever is beyond the life where I had the pleasure of receiving your guidance all I can say is Carpe Diem and Godspeed!

Dale (Mr. Gray to his students) was an inspiration to the many students he taught in Amherst, NS. He was a fantastic teacher with a keen intellect and a sharp wit. He cared for his students and was as interested in their lives outside of school as he was with their academic achievement within the school walls. For many Amherst students, Dale’s class was their introduction to Shakespeare. For others, he was their guide and discussion moderator as they took their first political science class. Towards the end of his time at ARHS, he was the kind and helpful librarian who was always willing to help a student expand their mind while completing assignments.
I understand that Dale has had a varied and successful career since leaving the teaching profession. I can only assume that he was as engaging a preacher as he was a teacher. And given his penchant for storytelling, I’m sure he kept his sailing buddies thoroughly entertained with everything from fish stories to political discussions.
It’s been at least 25 years since I’ve spoken with Dale. I can’t say I knew him well (outside of the classroom) but I wanted to ensure that those who mourn his loss will understand the profound positive impact that he had on the lives of his students.
Rest easy, Mr. Gray. You lived a meaningful life in service of others.
