Obituary of Carleton Alexander Mansfield

Carleton Alexander Mansfield Jr. Passed away on Friday, June 8, 2012, in the South Shore Regional Hospital in Bridgewater, with his family by his side, having fought a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Milton, N.S. on August 29, 1950, he was the son of Phyllis (Smith) Mansfield and the late Carleton Alexander Mansfield Sr. While he received his first year of schooling in Ontario, he continued his education at Schools in Harmony and Caledonia, Nova Scotia. He interrupted his studies to travel to Ontario, where he spent a year working for Defasco Steel, after which he returned to Nova Scotia, and completed his high school education at North Queens Rural High School. He joined the old “Metropolitan Stores” family in Digby, in 1971, and quickly rose to the position of Assistant Manager. He returned to Bridgewater in 1973, and immediately joined the “Michelin” team, officially retiring from that career in June, 2012. Carleton was an ardent sports fan, particularly in his support of his beloved Montreal Canadiens, cheering them loudly when they did well, and making all kinds of excuses for them when they did not. He also was a skilled participant. In fact, he took great pleasure in remembering that as a young man he had been scouted by his favourite team, the Boston Red Sox, but lost his position to no less a player than Carleton Fiske. He was content to play on the Michelin Baseball team, and to continue his interest in volleyball, basketball and skating. As a Bowler in the Michelin League, the Church League and the Men’s League, he was the proud recipient of many trophies. In later years, Carleton became an eager golfer, having been a member of the Olde Town Golf Course and more lately the Lunenburg Golf Club. Not content to be just “good”, he upped his game by scoring two holes in one. For the past few winters, as a member of the Bridgewater Curling Club, Carleton also managed to improve his game and to actually enjoy the winter months. A member of Bridgewater United Baptist Church, Carleton had in the past served as an Usher there. He also had been a member of the Bridgewater Jaycees. Carleton was an avid gardener, who also enjoyed fishing, camping, and a good game of cards. He liked listening to music, with Celine Dion, Nana Miskouri, Nazareth, Bob Segar, John Fogarty and AC/DC among his favourites. Carleton is survived by his wife, Kimberley (Whitman), daughters Melissa Mansfield (and partner Ryan West) in Bridgewater and Amanda Mansfield in Wolfville, and their mother, his first wife, Cecile (Frail) in Bridgewater. He also leaves to mourn his Mother, Phyllis Mansfield in Bridgewater, and brother Larry (Elizabeth) Mansfield in Halifax, as well as half brothers Walter (Dora) Selig in New Minas and Stephen (Marlene) Selig in Dartmouth. He was predeceased by brother Barry and Sister, Wendy, in infancy, and one half sister, Beverly Woods. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, step-nieces and step-nephews. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Carleton’s life will be held on Tuesday, June 12, at 2:00 pm at Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Bridgewater. Visitation Monday evening June 11, from 7:00 to 9:00 at the funeral home. No flowers by request.
