Obituary of David Ward Murdock
David Ward Murdock
It is with great sadness and loving memories, that we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. David was born March 22, 1926 in Truro, NS. After high school, he attended Mount Allison University and then returned home to enter the car business with his father and brother (HW Murdock Ltd). The future brought a new challenge for Dave when he and wife Helen built and operated the Glengarry Motel and Restaurant in Truro for 17 years. Dave was forced into early retirement due to ill health but continued to work part time as an agent for Wood Gundy and Merrill Lynch. After fully retiring, he and Helen moved to the Bridgewater area to be near their daughter and family. Dave and Helen wintered in Fort Myers, Florida for many years where Dave dearly loved to be. A special place closer to home was his choice for a "luxury" getaway -"The Fishing Camp" in Guysborough County. Dave helped build the camp with his dad and continued to spend time there for over 40 years - later on with his buddies and family. He held the record for being there with four generations of family, until he could no longer attend. Dave was active in the community while his health permitted, being a member and president of Truro area Kinsmen Club, served with his wife as fundraiser for the Canadian Diabetes Association – Truro and area, president of the Nova Scotia Inn Keepers Guild, and as an elder in St. Andrews United Church in Truro. Those who knew him are well aware of his great sense of humour and he maintained it right to the end - always trying to make everyone laugh. Special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of SSRH as well as Ryan Hall for the care they provided, as well as to the residents of Hirtle Lane who were his good friends. Dave was pre-deceased by his father Brig. HW Murdock, his mother Mildred; brother, William (Bill), and grandson David Atkinson. Surviving family are his wife, Helen (Dunlop); daughters, Susan Atkinson, Katherine Gador (Rob), Winnipeg; sons, Brian Murdock (Muriel), Ancaster; Ward Murdock (Kim), Fredericton. Grandchildren, Mark Atkinson, Lauren, Keith, and Robin Murdock, Rachel and Ryan Gador and Michelle and Melanie Murdock; sister, Marie Cooper, Truro and sister-in-law Donna Murdock, Truro; as well as many nieces and nephews. No visitation at the funeral home by request. Service of Remembrance will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 12 in Bridgewater United Church. Rev. Robert Zinck officiating. Private family interment in Fort Point Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Senior Wheels, Bridgewater, The David Atkinson Memorial Scholarship through TD Bank, or the Multiple Sclerosis Society at www.mssociety.ca. Arrangement entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where on-line condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
