Merrill Eugene McCarthy
70, Bridgewater, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 1, 2012, at South Shore Regional Hospital. Born in Bridgewater, he was the son of the late Russell and Audrey (Penney) McCarthy. Merrill tended bar at Topsil Tavern in Bridgewater for many years before gaining employment at Berwick Bakery and then soon after at Farmers Dairy, where he worked until his retirement. He enjoyed an active life, was an avid outdoorsman, and had a vast amount of interests that included hunting, fishing, motorcycles, woodworking, and enjoying outings with friends for a cup of coffee. In earlier years, he attended oxpulling events at the South Shore Exhibition, and at local smaller venues. His teams of “Loin and Bright” changed over time, but his spirit and passion for the sport and people remained the same. Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Sandra (Fox), Bridgewater; son Blair (Nancy), Bridgewater; daughter, Tanya (Halifax); and grandson, Cody (Wolfville); several brothers, nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister. There will be no visitation by request. Burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to SHAID Animal Shelter.
