Obituary of Dorothy Eileen Rafuse
Dorothy Eileen Rafuse (MacDonald)
93, Bridgewater. Eileen Rafuse died peacefully on September 14, 2012 at Hillside Pines – Home for Special Care in Bridgewater, after a prolonged illness. Eileen had been a citizen of Bridgewater for 65 years. Born in Sunny Brae, Pictou County, she was the daughter of the late Osborne MacDonald and Jessie (Taylor) MacDonald. Following her schooling in New Glasgow, she taught at the Maritime Business College in Halifax. A short secretarial position then followed. She moved to Bridgewater upon marriage to Robert N. Rafuse. She was involved in the Bridgewater school system through Home and School and was treasurer of the Girl Guide Association in Bridgewater for many years. A Scottish girl amongst Lunenburg County natives, she accumulated a host of friends. Being particularly quick-witted, she became well-known in the game of bridge and enjoyed teaching others. She was very much involved with the Bridgewater United Church and the United Church Women. She particularly enjoyed the summers at the family cottage on the LaHave River. While not a natural sailor, she accompanied her husband on his sailing yacht, particularly if there was a bridge game. On the death of her daughter in 1970, she established in Anne’s memory a scholarship fund for Bridgewater High School students. More than forty students have been assisted in pursuing their university aspirations as a result of this initiative. Eileen is survived by her son Richard N. Rafuse (Wendy Johnston), grandson James N. Rafuse (Renée), granddaughter Lori Rafuse, and great-grandchildren Gabrielle and Geneviève. Also surviving is her sister-in-law Jean Roy (Douglas) of Halifax, brother-in-law Edward N. Rafuse of Renfrew, Ontario, and brother-in-law Gordon Dunphy of Halifax. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Robert N. Rafuse, her daughter Anne Rafuse, her sister Audrey Dunphy, and her parents. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at the United Church in Bridgewater. Online condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
