Obituary of Vera Marguerite Salzman

Vera Marguerite Salzman 93, Lower Northfield, Lunenburg Co., passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2012 in North Queen’s Nursing Home, Caledonia, where she had been residing. Vera was born and raised in Lower Northfield; she was the third of four children to the late Pearlie Freeman and Alma Blanche (Silver) Lohnes. Having grown up during the Depression, she had to leave the area for summer employment and went to Berwick, Kings Co., where she met her future husband, Joe. They lived in Grafton for several years, moving to Black Point, Halifax Co., when Joe bought a grocery business there. In addition to her shifts in the store, Vera was active in the ladies auxiliary of the newly formed Black Point & District Fire Department. She was active in the Mystic Star Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. In the 60’s they bought an old farmhouse in Northfield and promptly named it “Silver Maples” – a property that had been in the Silver side of the family for most of its existence. Although it was originally planned to be a weekend getaway, upon retirement it became the family home. The “Lodge” continued to be a major focus in Vera’s life. She became a member of Mae Chapter of the Eastern Star upon moving to the Bridgewater area. She assumed many positions within the organization. These included three terms as Worthy Matron of Mae Chapter, Grand Chaplain and Grand Representative to Alberta in Nova Scotia and PEI. In May 2003, she was elevated to Life Member. Surviving are daughter, Joan Cleveland, Queensland; son, Robert “Bob”, Lower Northfield; brother, Perry (Pauline) Lohnes, Upper Northfield; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband, Joseph Richard Salzman; son, Keith in infancy; sister, Pearle Beals; brother, Murray Lohnes. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m., Tuesday, November 6, in Sweeny’s Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater, with an Order of the Eastern Star tribute beginning at 7 p.m. Memorial service will be 2 p.m., Wednesday in Sweeny’s Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater. Rev. William Gustafson officiating. Burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Order of the Eastern Star or charity of choice. The family wishes to give special thanks to North Queens Nursing Home and the dedicated staff for their devoted care of Vera over the past four years.
