Obituary of Wylie M. Smith

Dr. Wylie M. Smith 86, passed away on 14 JULY 2012 at Ryan Hall Shannex, Bridgewater. He was born in Bible Hill, NS in 1926, son of the late Merle & Myrtle (Whidden, Walsh) Smith. He served in the Navy during WWII and graduated from Ontario Veterinary College, Guelph ONT with his DVM in 1949. He and his wife Kaye (Catherine A MacKenzie) settled in Bridgewater where he practised Veterinary Medicine for many years. He founded South Shore Veterinary Services and completed his professional career at Nova Veterinary Clinic. Wylie served on Bridgewater Town Council and was Chairman of Parks & Recreation when the new location for the Desbrisay Museum & Town Park was completed in 1967 as a Centennial Project. He was awarded the "Key to Bridgewater" for his service. He was very interested in the growth of the Town of Bridgewater and bought land to develop Pinecrest Subdivision. He was a member of the Kinsmen Club, Golden K, Bridgewater Curling Club and served on the South Shore Regional Hospital Board for a number of years. He was a devoted father to his disabled son, Chris, and cared for him during the many years he remained at home. He loved to spend his spare time gardening and also enjoyed collecting antiques and travelling when he could get away. Wylie is survived by his sons, Christopher David at LaHave Manor Adult Residential Centre, Dayspring, Alexander "Sandy," Bridgewater and daughter Connie (Guy Comeau), Martin's River; grandsons, Callum (Juliette) Haughn, Jacob (Melissa) Wentzel; great grandson, Perin Wentzel; brother, Russell (Maureen) Walsh, Dartmouth; sisters, Theresa Burley, Verna Stone, Phyllis Hinton, Fairley Lynds, all of Truro, NS; sisters-in-law, Joan (Mrs James Caldwell) Sydney Mines & Bibsey (Mrs Gordon MacKeigan) Florence, Cape Breton, many nieces & nephews and lifelong friend, Gerald "Hut" Hutchinson, Bridgewater. He was predeceased by his wife, Kaye, sister Dorothy (Millard) Rector and brother, Gerald Walsh. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00PM, Saturday, July 21st at Sweeny's Funeral Chapel, Bridgewater, Rev Ivan Norton officiating. No visitation by request of the family.
