Obituary of Mervyn William Colp

Mervyn William Colp It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle at the age of 70 on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Bridgewater, he was the son of Elsie Etta Colp (Colp), Bridgewater and the late Charles Harris Colp. Choosing not to complete his high school education, Mervyn travelled to Port Burwell, Ontario, to pick tobacco after which he decided to work in the forestry industry, road construction, and then later as a freight handler at the Halifax Waterfront. Mervyn joined Atlantic Oxygen Ltd., as a truck driver in 1967. He continued his career in the industrial gases and welding supply business for 32 years as sales rep, territory and branch manager; serving the South Shore from Hubbards to Yarmouth, where he met many respected and faithful friends along the way. He was a former fire chief for the Newcombville and District Fire Department and Scout Leader of the First Newcombville Scout Troop. He is survived by his mother, Elsie; loving wife of 44 years, Lorraine (Frail); daughter, Natasha (Ian) Freeman, Bridgewater; son, Galen (Angie) Pine Grove; cherished granddaughters, Adriane, Claire and Lyric; sisters, BettyAnne McDorman (Lawrence), Fredericton; Annette Dawson (Kenneth), Lower Sackville; sister in law, Linda Colp, Timberlea; as well as many nieces , nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by sister, Patricia and brother, David. Visitation will be held 7-9 p.m., Wednesday, February 20, in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Thursday in Bridgewater United Church, 87 Hillcrest Street Bridgewater with Rev. Eleanor Scarlett officiating. Interment in Lakeview Cemetery, Pleasant River.
