Douglas Leroy Corkum
83 Midville Branch and formally of Middle LaHave passed away April 18, 2013 at Rosedale Home for Special care in New Germany where he was a resident for a year. He was the son of the late Russell and Myrtle (Lohnes) Corkum of Middle LaHave. The sea being in his blood, he made a career with the Canadian Coast Guard from which he retired early to his family home in Middle LaHave to care for his aged mother. In doing so, he traded his captain’s hat for and apron, becoming an excellent cook in the kitchen. He is the last surviving member of immediate family. He is survived by his nephew Robert and Phyllis Oickle of Midville Branch, who, in 2004 provided him with a home and tender loving care when he was no longer capable of living in his own house due to ill health. Also surviving is his brother- in-law Roy Wentzell of East LaHave. Several nieces and nephews and their families He was predeceased by Sisters Ferne Oickle, Greta Joudrey. Mona Wentzell; Brothers Melvin, and Howard in infancy. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. There will not be any visiting at the funeral home by request. A public graveside service will be held Monday April 22 2013 at 11 am in the Middle LaHave Cemetery, Middle LaHave, Rev Jane Reid officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany, the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, or charity of choice.
