Obituary of Melvin James Croft

Melvin James Croft 82, Hebbs Cross, Lunenburg Co., passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013 at his home. Born in Camperdown, he was the son of the late Leroy and Bernice (Slauenwhite) Croft. Melvin is survived by his daughters, Joanna (Roger Beck) Croft, Lynn (George) Hubley, Judy (Ambrose Zinck) Croft, Nancy (Harold) Orman, Lisa Croft; sons, Wade Croft, David Croft, Brian (Barbara Wilson) Croft, Martin (Darlene) Croft, Richard (Mallory Corkum) Croft; sister, Margaret (Robert) Veinotte; brothers, Gerald Croft, Merle Croft, Gary Croft; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Carrie; daughters, Gretchen and twin sons, Kevin and Kennith in infancy; granddaughter, Annette-Marie Hubley and a great-grandson. Melvin was a very down to earth, honest, reliable and hard working man. He enjoyed a simple life doing what he enjoyed and doing it his way. He was the type of person who worried about everyone but himself; he would give you the shirt off his back and wanted nothing in return. At the age of 19, Melvin started working long hard hours day after day to provide for his family. He never complained. He began by hauling logs and pulpwood with his own truck. When he first started it was hard for him because he did it the old fashioned way, by hand, then gradually moved into easier times. His career came to an end at age 80 but we still knew where to find him, outside, doing what he loved most. Over the years, Melvin had the opportunity to not only work for but to work with Bowater Mersey, Calvin Snyder, Max Drennan, Terry Robar, Jackie Turner and the late Harris Turner along with others too numerous to mention. Wherever there was work Melvin was there. At this time, the family would like to thank his friend and companion, Shirley, for being there for our Pop. Also, thanks to Sweeny’s Funeral Home for their kindness, Rev. Catharine House for a beautiful service and the pallbearers for their help. Thanks to everyone for your phone calls, flowers and for being there. We would also like to give special thanks to a few truck drivers who accompanied Pop to his final resting place. Thanks to Mike Beaumont; Branch Tree Nursery, driver, Joey Uhlman; W.R. Bolivar’s Transport, driver Roger Beck; Bernard Mailman Projects, driver, Mike Mailman and last but not least Jackie Turner. Thank you all for your care and support. Everyone’s kindness was greatly appreciated. May God bless each and every one. - The family of the late Melvin Croft
