Obituary of Elizabeth Rebecca Hirtle

Elizabeth Rebecca Hirtle 88 of Bridgewater passed away peacefully at 3:55pm on Thursday November 7, 2013 at the Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital in Lunenburg. Born on Middle Island of the LaHave Islands, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Hirtle) Walfied. Her home was centered on the Islands where in her early days, she was most comfortable visiting neighbours in her row boat, volunteering at the Anglican Church and being involved with all aspects of the fisheries. She was educated in a one room school house and later managed tourist rental properties along with her husband Everett. She was very kind and brought a smile to everyone she met. As a result, she had friends throughout Atlantic and Eastern Canada and New England, places she enjoyed visiting. She loved to bake and her molasses cookies were especially loved by all. She spent her later years in Bridgewater where she enjoyed visiting the park by the river with Stanley. Although a sad occasion for many, we thank the Lord that her suffering has come to a peaceful end. May her smile continue to bring warmth to all those who loved her. She will be missed by her son Ricky Hirtle of Toronto, her companion Stanley McCarthy of Conquerall Mills and her good friend Gail Tanner of Bridgewater, as well as many other friends and relatives. She was predeceased by her first husband Ivan Himmelman, second husband Everett Hirtle, former companion Arthur Reiser of Petite Riviere, and sister, Daisy Hirtle of LaHave Islands. Visitation will be held 2:00 to 4:00 P.M., Saturday November 16 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Funeral service will be held 1:00 P.M., Sunday November 17 in Saint Michael’s Anglican Church, Petite Riviere, Rev. Oliver Osmond Officiating, burial will follow in the LaHave Island Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of choice. Online condolences made be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
