Obituary of Winnifred Townsend

Winnifred Sarah Townsend (nee Jennings) 86, Of Bridgewater / Halifax. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She died peacefully on August 15, 2007 at South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born on May 7, 1921 in Sydney, Cape Breton, she was the daughter of Blanche and Alfred Jennings. She married Frederick C Townsend with whom she shared 64 memorable years. Besides her husband , she is survived by her son David and wife Valerie of Bridgewater, NS, her daughter Linda and husband Jim of Calgary, AB, grandchildren Geoffrey (and special friend Mary) of Calgary, AB, Gregory (and wife Taru) of Edmonton, step-grandsons Scott Crocker(and spouse Tracy and step great grandsons Damien and Tyler) of Enfield, NS, Joey Crocker(and wife Lorena and step great grandson Mateo) of Halifax, NS, brother Francis (and wife Lillian) of Sydney, NS, and sister Olive (and husband Harold Ryan) of San Rafael, CA, and many nephews and nieces. She had a special relationship with her children, grandchildren, niece Christina Begley who lived with ‘Aunt Winnie’ for many years and many other nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers and sisters; Laura, Pearl, Jim, Bill, Lila, Ed, Nora, Annie, Fred, Roland, and Sydney. She was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, Marshettes and St. Mathias’ Hazel Paul Group. She worked as a realtor in Halifax for 20 years and spoke fondly of those with whom she had as clients and colleagues. She will be remembered for her vibrant personality, endless energy, and love of life. A very special thank you is given to Susan and Wendy who cared for her prior to her hospitalization, and the medical staff at the emergency room and 4th floor Palliative Care Unit at South Shore Regional Hospital, all of whom showed true professionalism in their care of Winnie. Cremation will take place. Memorial Service will be held at St. Mathias Anglican Church, 6131 Chebucto Rd, Halifax, NS on Monday, August 20, 2007 at 11a.m. Donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice or to Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia, 6009 Quinpool Rd.
