Obituary of Martha Ruby Ramey

Martha Ruby Ramey 87, of Bridgewater passed away peacefully in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater at 5:07 A.M. Saturday October 19, 2013 after a 2 year battle with heart failure and vascular dementia. She was discovered, while still in high school, by a leading hairdresser in town and was sent away to Montreal for training. She worked at Ormy’s Beauty Salon on King Street until the birth of her only child, Maxine, in 1952. Her business was conducted out of the family home on 28 Oak Street until she retired from hairdressing in 1988. In 1996 her husband Max became ill with dementia and was caregiver to him at home until his placement at the Veterans’ Unit in Lunenburg in 2003. He passed away their February of 2006. This was 2 weeks after Martha’s 80th birthday. During her career as wife, mother and hairdresser Martha excelled in cooking, gardening, needlepoint, knitting, golf, curling and duplicate Bridge. Through these activities and hairdressing, Martha cultivated many dear friends and social contacts. She is survived by daughter Maxine Ramey; sisters Joan (Goulden) Oickle and Norma (Goulden) Doane; brother Kenny Goulden and brother-in-law George Mitchell. Martha was predeceased by her parents Ralph and Anzo (Doane) Goulden, husband A. Max Ramey; sister Eleanor (Goulden) Mitchell. Visitation will be held 7 to 9 P.M., Wednesday October 23 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater and from where the funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Thursday October 24, Rev Fran Boutilier officiating. A private family burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers memorial donation in Martha’s memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the S.H.A.I.D. animal shelter. A reception following the service will be held in the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Hall, 78 Alexandra Ave., Bridgewater. Many heartfelt thanks are in order for the EHS Medic’s, Home Support, the VON, and the nursing staff of the 4th floor Medical Unit, Dr. D. Edmonds.
