Obituary of Glenwood Owen Rhodenizer

Glenwood Owen Rhodenizer 98 passed away on May 6th, 2013 at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital – Veteran’s Unit in Lunenburg, NS. Glenwood was born on October 30th 1914 in Liverpool, Nova Scotia to Calder Rhodenizer of Dayspring and Eva Rhodenizer (Rhodenizer) of West Northfield. Glenwood was preceded in death by his parents Calder and Eva (Rhodenizer) Rhodenizer, his wife of 60 years, Grace Rhodenizer, and his brothers Ernest Rhodenizer and Lee Rhodenizer. He is survived by his sister Pauline Rhodenizer, Bridgewater; Son Terry (Florence) Rhodenizer, Halifax; Grandson Stephen (Lucille) Rhodenizer, Lunenburg; Great-Granddaughter Angela (Cory) Zinck, Lunenburg; Great–Great Grandson Owen, Lunenburg; and many nieces and nephews. Glenwood was well known by his nickname “Shorty”. He grew up in Bridgewater, NS where he attended Bridgewater High School and was captain of the both the hockey and baseball team, as well as Lieutenant in Charge of the School Army Cadet Program. Glenwood joined the Canadian Armed Forces and served in the 4th Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. He was deployed to England, France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Czechoslovakia before returning home in 1946. He then began work for Canada Postal Service as a mail clerk where he worked for 33 years until his retirement. Glenwood married Grace Myra (Veinott) in 1941, and welcomed their son, Terry in 1942. Glenwood was an all star in the town baseball and softball league and also town champ in snooker and pool. He was very proud of his years coaching, umpiring and refereeing in the town’s baseball and hockey leagues. He was a long time member of the Bridgewater Golf & Country Club, Old Town Golf Course & Osprey Ridge Golf Club, where he loved to play in the Soup & Sandwich events, as well as in the South Shore Seniors Men’s League. During the winters he enjoyed bowling and dancing. He was also a proud, life-time member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 24 – Bridgewater and over the years, held various executive offices and served as Vice President, as well as Chairman of the Pennies from Heaven Program. There will be no visitation by request. A Public Legion Tribute will be held at Sweeney’s Funeral Home Chapel, York Street, Bridgewater on Wednesday, May 8th at 7 pm. Funeral to take place on Thursday, May 9th at 2 pm at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 25 Phoenix Street, Bridgewater, Rev Paul Jensen officiating, followed by a private burial at Brookside Cemetery. The family will be greeting friends and relatives at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 24, 78 Churchill Street, Bridgewater following interment. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
