Obituary of Clarence Nauss

Clarence Bennett Nauss 81, passed away July 13, 2002 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, N.S. Prior to his passing, he was able to express having lived a good life for 81 years, and for that he was a lucky man, as were his family and all who new him. Born in Bridgewater on September 21, 1920, he was the son of the late Bennett James and Esther (Creaser) Nauss. He was a devoted and loving husband to wife Marie (Demone) and father to Sharon Nauss, Kentville. He is survived by sisters Marie Silver, Muriel Knickle, and Verna Lohnes, brother Ronald; many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was predeceased by sisters Jean Demone and Minnie Parks, brothers Murray, Russell, Fred and Charles. Clary was an original founder and current President of Nauss Brothers Ltd. construction company. In the past he also owned and operated Safeway Insurance Agencies and was a Real Estate Broker. He remained passionate about Nauss Brothers throughout his life, and at the time of his death was still not officially retired. He worked with three generations in the family business, and had a special relationship with all “the boys” and in particular his grand-nephew Shawn. A veteran of the 2nd World War, Clary was a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He served as President of Bridgewater Branch # 24, as Zone Commander, and in 2000 was awarded the Palm Leaf to Meritorious Service Medal, the highest honour awarded to a Legion member. He served his community modestly and without expectation of recognition, but his family is proud to list some of the many other past contributions and achievements of this exceptional man: Master of Acacia Lodge # 39, President of the Bridgewater Kiwanis Club; President of the South Shore Real Estate Board and two-time President of the Nova Scotia Real Estate Board; President of the Bridgewater Curling Club; Councillor and Deputy Mayor of the Town of Bridgewater; and recipient of the Community W.A.Y.S award for volunteer service to the community. Spending time with his family, his business, and community service left little time for hobbies, but Clary loved to entertain and spend time with friends. He enjoyed many summers at the cottage at Blysteiner Lake and winters in Florida. He discovered reading for pleasure late in life, and read voraciously. He was known and admired by many people and will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeney’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. Visitation will be held Monday, from 2-4 and 7-9 with a public Legion Tribute Service being held at 7 pm Monday. Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 2:00 pm, in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bridgewater, Rev James Slack Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. Family flowers only please. Donations may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Bridgewater, Heart & Stroke Foundation, or charity of choice. www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
