Obituary of Bertha Rae Langille
Bertha Rae Langille
Bertha Langille (nee Brown), Barss Corner, passed away peacefully at Mountain Lea Lodge in Bridgetown, NS on Tuesday September 16, 2014 at the age of 86. She is survived by her daughter Rebecca “Becky” Langille (Bill Flemming) and her son Jeffrey Langille (Shelley) all of Barss Corner; granddaughters Jennifer Rafuse (Arthur Wentzel), Rachel Langille (Mike McGlone) and Jessica Langille (Josh Van’THof) as well as her “little ones” great-grandchildren Lily and Jonathan McGlone, David Wentzel and Liam Van’Thof. Step-grandchildren, Joanne Flemming (Bruce Sanford), Jeff Flemming (Lisa) and their daughter Ryleigh, Justin Flemming (Elaine) and their son Austin. She is also survived by hundreds of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Langille in August 2007; parents, Daniel and Rachel (Christie) Brown and twelve siblings; Gertrude Hilder, J. Albert Brown, Andrew Brown, Margaret Hoare, H. Jeanette (Jean) Shaw, Fred Brown, Don Brown, Marian Scott, Ed Brown, S. Alex Brown, Rev. Wilena Brown, and Eva MacRae. Born in Valley Station and raised on the family farm in Kemptown, Colchester County she completed high school in Truro, while boarding at the home of Professor Graham Cameron and his family. She graduated from the Victoria General School of Nursing in 1950 as a Registered Nurse and worked at the VG where she met Arthur (as her patient). They married in 1951, settled in Barss Corner and she continued nursing at the Dawson Memorial Hospital in Bridgewater until 1957. A caregiver all her life she began “helping” her older sisters and brothers when they had new babies arrive, then as mother’s helper to the Camerons, as a nurse, and continuing through her life until she was no longer able. From providing first aid in the community, assisting on the ambulance and with the funeral home owned and operated by her husband, to providing in-home vitamin or medication injections to seniors, testing Brownies and Girl Guides earning first aid badges she was a care-giver. She cared for her community and served as a tireless volunteer with the Community Hall, Recreation Centre, Red Cross, Cancer Society, Church, Nursery School, as a Board Member of Rosedale Home for Special Care, and was a Life Member with Women’s Institute; she was presented with several awards for volunteer service. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt and gave love and help to whoever was in need – family, friend, acquaintance or stranger. Everyone was welcome in her home and at her table – people were the most important thing in her life, she always cared how they were and what they were doing. She enjoyed being outdoors, puttering in the yard, going for a walk, helping Jeff in the shop – all preferred over dealing with her nemesis in the house – dust! When we were growing up she would play ball, took swimming lessons to overcome her fear of the water, served as a taxi driver for us and our friends, rescued us from snakes (from as great a distance as she could manage it), and she continued this with her grandchildren – playing a game of badminton with Jessie when she was 75-much to Dad’s disapproval! In respect of her wishes, there will be no visitation at the funeral home. A public graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday Sept. 20, 2014 at Barss Corner Community Cemetery, Barss Corner. Rev. Sam Jess officiating. A reception will follow at Barss Corner Community Hall to share memories and hugs after the service. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Barss Corner Community Hall, the Barss Corner Community Cemetery or the New Germany and Area Medical Centre.
