Obituary of Allan Nelson Richardson

Allan Nelson Richardson Of Petite Riviere. It is with sadness and a great deal of pride that his family announces the death of Dr Allan Nelson Richardson, Optometrist (retired). Allan passed away at his home in Petite Riviere, NS surrounded by his family and his wife of 38 years, Frances. Allan was born in Harrogate, Yorkshire, England on July 5th, 1933 to Thomas A. Richardson and Dorothy (Nelson) Richardson. Allan obtained his Degree in Ophthalmic Optics from City University London England (Northampton Polytechnic) in 1954. He then went into National Service and served as a Master Sgt. in RAF hospital Ophthalmology Unit. Upon completion of his National Service he practiced Optometry for four years in Zambia, Africa. He immigrated to Canada in 1964, eventually settling in St. Johns Nfld. where he set up a Practice on Duckworth Street from which he retired in the late 1980’s. Allan and Fran moved to Gabriola Island, B.C. and stayed for five years, before the call of the Atlantic proved to be too strong and they returned to the East Coast settling in Petite Riviere. Allan was an active member of the Petite Riviere Volunteer Fire Department for eight years and enjoyed the work and the friendships that resulted. As a young person, he was extremely active in sports most particularly Track and Field, Badminton, Tennis, and Rugby. His active lifestyle kept him fit well into his 70’s. He loved hiking, gardening and just life in general, enjoying every day to the fullest. Allan bore his illness with dignity and grace, never complaining - even during the worst of times. He will be sorely missed by his wife, Fran, sons Nick (Ingrid) Crousetown, Simon (Jeffery Robinson) Vancouver, Paul (Heather) Edmonton, Bill (Jackie) Holland Landing, Ont., daughter Carmen Richardson (Len Baker) Newmarket, Ont., sister Joyce (Geoff Lloyd) York, England, grandchildren, Christopher, Tegan, Clara, Molly, Elizabeth, and Allan. A celebration of Allan’s life will be held at the Petite Riviere Fire Dept Hall on Saturday, February1st from 4 – 6 pm. Family flowers only. Donations in Allan’s name may be made to the Petite Riviere Volunteer Fire Department Truck Fund. On-line condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com.
