Obituary of Beulah Pearl Richardson

Beulah Pearl (MacKenzie) Richardson Age 97 – It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother/Grandmother on Saturday April, 12 2014. She was the eldest daughter of the late Emma (Sperry) and Benjamin MacKenzie of Lockport. Born in 1916 in Lydgate, Shelburne County, she attended Lockport High School. After graduation she travelled to Montreal and studied Nursing at the Woman’s General Hospital where she received her certification in 1939. With her degree in hand, she returned to Nova Scotia and started her nursing career at the Dawson Memorial Hospital in Bridgewater. It was shortly after moving to Bridgewater that she met her husband of 61 years, the late William Pennell Richardson. Together they started a new chapter in her life. She left her nursing career to raise a family and provide a warm and loving home for them. Once the children were settled in school, she returned to work as an assistant to Dr. William Bennett. Beulah came from a large family and early in her young life; the family home was destroyed by fire. As the eldest daughter, she was given the chore of helping with the cooking and baking which she excelled at and which continued throughout her life. During their time of need, she valued the kindness of others and throughout her life returned that kindness and generosity to family, friends, neighbors and those in need. Beulah attended the Bridgewater Baptist Church where she was a member of Group Two. She is an honorary member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Bridgewater Fire Department, Past-President of the Bridgewater Ladies Curling Club – a sport she thoroughly enjoyed playing. She loved gardening, playing bridge with her family and friends and spent many hours reading until she was diagnosed with macular degeneration. She jokingly remarked that things started falling apart when she turned 83. “I’m great for the shape I’m in” She loved tea parties with her grandchildren, helping her husband in the tailor shop and spending lazy summer days at the cottage on Mush-A-Mush Lake. She is survived by her children: Jane (Bob) Cumming, Jimmy (Katie) Richardson; grandchildren Tanya (Kris) Baker, Sarah (Jim) Floyd, Benjamin (Kate MacDonald) Richardson; great grandchildren Gavin Baker, Sadie Baker and Nolan Floyd. She is also survived by her sister, Augusta (Clark) Hennigar of Halifax and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Pennell, sister Leona (Les) Sutherland, Eileen (Ron) Loewen, Bernice (Roy) Mitchell and brother Les (Marge) MacKenzie, Great grand twins in infancy Aaron & Robin Floyd. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Bridgewater. Cremation has taken place and a graveside funeral will be held at a later date. No visitation. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bridgewater Baptist Church, the Bridgewater Fireman’s Band or a charity of your choice. “Bye for Now”.
