Obituary of Frances Alexandria Romkey
Frances Alexandria (Slater) Romkey
Age 102, Crescent Beach, Lunenburg Co., passed away at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg on Saturday, December 13, 2014. Born on August 10, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Honorable Gordon Romkey and Elsie (Slater) Romkey. Frances was a graduate of Mount St. Vincent, Acadia University and received her Masters in Child Guidance from Columbia University in New York City. Frances taught in Queens, Lunenburg and Halifax counties, retiring in 1970. She was a lifetime member of the Liberal Party and St. Matthews Presbyterian Church. Frances is survived by her niece, Sheila (Neil) Chambers; niece in law, Cheryl Romkey; grand nieces, Charmaine (Wayne) Mosher, Jennifer (Brian) Ste. Croix, Jamie (Bonnie) Romkey, Raymond Romkey, Thomas (Jodi) Chambers; special friends, Valerie, Susan, Krista, Elaine, Barbara, David and Jack who made Frances’ last years at home very comfortable with the much appreciated home care workers of Lunenburg County, the many visits of Rev. and Mrs. Mawhinney and their kindness to her and her neighbours who helped any time Frances asked. Frances was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Lillian and Margaret; brother, Gordon; nephew, Gordon Romkey III. As with Frances’ wishes, there will be no visitation. Funeral service 11 a.m., Thursday, December 18, 2014 in St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church, West Dublin. Rev. Dr. Laurence Mawhinney officiating. Burial will follow in the Romkey Family Cemetery. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Matthew’s Presbyterian Church, RR#1, LaHave, NS B0R 1C0 or the Canadian Cancer Society.
