Obituary of Ivan Harold Wamboldt

Ivan Harold Wamboldt 89. Ivan left this world on February 22, 2014, the way he lived it: with dignity and quietly. He was born April 19, 1924 at Camperdown, the son of Alan H. and Laura (Zwicker) Wamboldt. He grew up in Camperdown and as many young men of his generation, he answered the call to serve during WW2. He was based throughout camps in Nova Scotia and was engaged as a training officer until the close of the war. By then his parents had relocated their farm to Rhodes Corner. After working at different occupations, Ivan began his long-term employment with the Unemployment Insurance office in Bridgewater. With changes in the department he was transferred to New Glasgow. Eventually he was transferred back to Bridgewater where he remained employed until his retirement. Ivan was an active volunteer in many organisations throughout his life and a founding member of the Co-op, LaHave River Credit Union, and Dayspring and District Fire Department. The Lutheran Church was very important to him playing a vital role in his worship life. He served in many leadership roles from an early time, and continued to be involved until ill health made participation difficult. Ivan also served for many years as the organist at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Bridgewater, and continued to provide supply until later in life. While living in New Glasgow, he and his wife Helen were active in the Christian Reformed Church, and always spoke of the close friendships they had forged. One of his joys was the time he spent tending his gardens, and for which he received recognition and acknowledgement of his abilities. His gardens were a source of contentment and joy for him, and in warmer months he could be found tending the many plants that gave him immense pleasure. Together, he and Helen took many trips throughout the world, and one of his highlights was standing in the church in Germany where his ancestors had worshipped before traveling to the new World over 250 years before. Ivan was survived by his wife Helen G. (Johnson) (Oickle) Wamboldt. In 1964 he and Helen were married and he became an instant father of two boys. Later, son Philip joined the family. Ivan is survived by step-sons Peter (Virginia) Oickle, Bridgewater; David (Robin) Oickle, Ottawa; Wamboldt granddaughter Marie Claire Wamboldt, and daughter in law Carol Slack Wamboldt, Pleasantville; Oickle grandchildren: Andrew (Gander), Christianna (Dartmouth); Jonathan (Bridgewater, Eric (Toronto), Daniel (Montreal), and Sarah (Toronto), and great grandchildren, Adwyn and Camron. He is also survived by his sister Norma Slaunewhite (Tracy), Oakhill. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. Ivan was pre-deceased by his parents; son, Philip A. Wamboldt (2005); sisters, Ruth (Sherman) Faulkenham, Alice (Keith) MacConnell. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bridgewater, 10 a.m., Friday, February 28, conducted by the Rev. Paul Jensen. Internment will be at St. Matthew’s Cemetery, Upper LaHave. Family flowers only; memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Accessibility Fund or a charity of your choice.
