Obituary of Helen Catherine MacLean

Helen Catherine (Moase) MacLean (b. July 24, 1932), daughter of the late Stewart and Ethel Moase of New Annan, PEI, died November 13, 2015 at Drumlin Hills, Bridgewater, NS. She was with family in the peace of her home and the love of family and friends. Her husband, the Rev. George H. MacLean, passed away in July. Blessed to be family are children Catherine and Earl (Andrew and Hannah), David and Terri (Carsten and Myra), John and Sherry (Josie and Duncan), George and Laura Lee (Hilary and Abigail), Susan and Chris; her brother Clifford, and her sister Evelyn (Milt Combs), and there are many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by, brother Keith; sisters-in-law Norma and Joyce; nephews Brian and Jim, and brother-in-law Don. Helen loved the classroom, studying at New Annan School, Kensington High, and Prince of Wales College. After graduating from Mount Allison University, Helen taught in Shizuoka, Japan with the United Church of Canada’s Women’s Missionary Society. Upon her return to Canada in 1956, she was Dean of Women for a year at the United Church School in Naramata, BC. Dear friends introduced her to the love of her life, George, and after a 100-day courtship they married on September 25, 1957. Their children grew up in unconditional love. Helen and George enjoyed happy years in Glenholme, Hampton, Sussex, Truro, and Pentz. They found great joy in their church communities, many benefiting from Helen’s leadership with CGIT, UCW, the deaf community and other groups. They raised their children surrounded by the people of their congregations and communities, many of whom became almost family. Helen was a remarkable quilter, a voracious reader, and a faithful friend. In 2010, Helen and George moved to Drumlin Hills where they continued to enjoy retirement, surrounded by peace and happiness in their large community of neighbours and friends. After generous donations following George's death, Helen's wish is that you find a way to give someone an unexpected helping hand. Helen willed her remains for medical research at Dalhousie University. The memorial service will be at West Side United Church, Pentz, NS on November 23 at 1:30pm. Interment for Mum and Dad will be at a later date in Fernhill Cemetery, Saint John, NB.
