Obituary of Maxwell Frederick Richard
Maxwell Frederick Richard
Age 85, formerly of Rhodes Corner, Lunenburg Co,. passed away on Friday, October 16, 2015 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born on LaHave Islands on January 2, 1930, he was a son of the late Lawrence William and Jennie Mildred (Hirtle) Richards. He started school in 1936 at Bells Island School until he left in 1944 at the age of 14 to start work with Nova Scotia Light and Power marine section where he worked until 1946. He then moved to Halifax where he learned carpentry and started working with Brookfield’s Construction Company where he was employed for two years until his job trade ended. He then went to work at the motor vehicle branch for a short time until relocating to Montreal to sail on the oil tankers which he continued to do for 12 years. He then returned home to Nova Scotia and was employed with General Motors until 1962 when he decided to leave and work on the cargo ships as Chief Mate, working up north for the summer and South America for the winter. In 1966 he returned back to Rhodes Corner where he bought and operated a grocery and gas bar business where the family continued to work until he sold it in 1977. Not ready to retire yet, Max returned to the ships again where he worked for another two years until he retired. Surviving are his sons, Ross (Nan) Richards, Corkum’s Island; Darrell (Peggy) Richards, Rhodes Corner; grandson, Tyler, Hamilton; sister, Garnett (Lorraine) Reinhardt, Lahave Islands; and nephew Warren Reinhardt, Burlington. He was predeceased by his wife, Verna Blossom (Weagle) Richard in 2011; brother, Allen Richards. There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. Service of Remembrance will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, October 21 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater with Rev. Paul Jensen officiating. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Bridgewater. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SHAID Animal Shelter, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or charity of choice. The family wish to thank the staff of Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany where he had been currently residing, Pineview Apartments residents and Staff, Bridgewater and Dr. Heather Robertson and the South Shore Regional Hospital nursing staff for all the care that was given to our father over the past few years.
