Obituary of Roland John Smith

Roland "Rollie" John Smith Age 76, New Germany, Lunenburg Co., passed away on Friday, February 6, 2015 in South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater. Born in Pleasant River, April 30, 1938, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Marion (Waterman) Smith. He attended North Queens Rural High School as well as Halifax Trade School in 1958 to become an electrician. He started his employment with LaHave Electrics in Bridgewater, working from 1959-1965. He then became safety inspector for Kings Mutual Insurance Company until 1969 when he began teaching the electrical construction course at the opening of the former Lunenburg Regional Vocational School, Bridgewater. He became an agent for the Kings Mutual Insurance Company in 1975 until retirement in 2007. He enjoyed bluegrass and country music and was an avid fiddle player since the age of fourteen. For over fifty years, Rollie enjoyed being a float plane pilot and in 2013 he was recognized with his 50 year award from the Bluenose Flying Club of Lunenburg County which he assisted in founding. He was a member and past president of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 102, New Germany and an active member of the Crossburn Snowmobile Club, Central Nova ATV Club and South Shore Bluegrass Music Association. Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Whynot) of 54years; son, Ronald, New Germany; daughter, Charlene Sentner, (Paul Robar), Bridgewater; grandsons, Marlon and Matthew Sentner; sister, Rosamond (Greg) Bailey, Edmonton. By personal request cremation has taken place and a private graveside service will take place in Epworth Cemetery, School Street, New Germany at a later date. No flowers by request, donations may be made to the New Germany and Area Medical Center.
