Obituary of Torry Nan Sullivan
Torry Nan Sullivan
Age 63 of East Dalhousie passed away on Wednesday February 18, 2015 at her home. Born in Westfield Massachusetts USA, she a daughter of the late Alfred and Gloria (Ramey) Rois. Although born American, Torry was always fiercely proud of having obtained her Canadian citizenship. She spent many of the young adult years helping run summer camp activities at the House of Roth campground in Clementsport. It was here that she taught horseback riding, swimming, crafts and games to children. This helped to set her on the path to becoming a teacher. After attending the Nova Scotia Teachers College in Truro she taught for 34 years at various elementary schools (East Green Harbour, Osborne Consolidated and Lockeport Elementary). As a conscientious and dedicated educator she taught every grade from primary to six. She touched hundreds of lives both in the classroom and as a community volunteer. School trips, teams, Girl Guides and East Dalhousie Baptist church had her full support. She was always ready to pitch in with time or donations for community fundraisers. After retiring, Torry and Robert moved to East Dalhousie. It was here she developed her passion for quilting. She took classes, joined the Bridgewater Quilters and worked everyday to learn her craft. She created beautiful quilts of all sizes and descriptions. She rarely ever kept one. They were always given away as gifts or donations. Torry was a person of tremendous drive and energy. Her active mind was rarely at rest. She was forever learning new skills and technology. Solving puzzles, playing cards and board games with friends were frequent activities. Torry was an avid reader, collector and gardener. She loved animals and was never without at least one pet by her side. Above all, Torry will be remembered for her deep and enduring love for her family. She encouraged and supported her children in their various endeavours. She made sure that they knew how much they were loved. Her relationship with her husband was that of true partners and friends. They met as young college students and stayed in love and respect for each other for almost forty-three years. Becoming a grandmother to a grandson and a granddaughter gave her tremendous joy. Torry's sudden passing will leave a hole in the lives of those who loved her, as her memory lives on. Torry is survived by her husband Robert; daughter Amy, Rhodes Corner; son Robert (Melanie), Hammonds Plains; sisters Randy Matson, New Hampshire USA; Leslie-Anne Rios, Massachusetts USA; Gwen Atkinson Toronto; brother Tiger Roth, Florida USA; grandchildren Mark and Heidi along with many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held 7:00 to 9:00 P.M., Tuesday March 31 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home 4896 Highway 10, New Germany.
