Obituary of Herbert Bell

Herbert Arthur Bell 79, of Bridgewater passed away at home on January 15, 2008. Born in Summerside, PEI, on January 28, 1929, to the late Herbert and Pearl (Bernard) Bell. Following High School, he apprenticed at the Journal Pioneer, Summerside as a Type Setter and when a job opportunity arose, he moved to Bridgewater where he was employed for 36 years with the Bridgewater Bulletin. Herbie became a proud resident of Bridgewater, raised a family and made contributions to community life through services on Town Council, Bridgewater Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Royal Canadian Legion, Masonic Lodge and Bridgewater United Church. An avid historian, Herbie was able to devote his retirement days to researching the Air Force presence in Summerside PEI before and after the Second World War. He assembled photographs, artifacts and chronicled many historical records. He was also committed to researching and documenting historical references on Bridgewater. Herbie was an avid gardener and looked forward to the arrival of his grandchildren for their summer visit. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Rena (Fergison) Bell; daughter, Christine (Tim) Richardson, London, Ontario; son, William (Frances) Bell, Wabush, Newfoundland and grandchildren, Nicole and Stephen. Visitation will be held Thursday from 7 to 9pm with a Masonic Lodge Service being held at 7pm in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. A memorial service will be held 2pm Friday in the Bridgewater United Church, Rev Ivan Norton officiating. A graveside service will be held in Summerside PEI in the summer. No flowers by request.
