Obituary of Kathryn M. Davis

Kathryn M. "Kay" Davis Long-time Bridgewater resident Kay Davis, former Bridgewater municipal leader, teacher, volunteer, and businesswoman, died in Halifax on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at the age of 93. Born in Halifax to the late Arthur and Mabel (Lawson) Theakston and raised in Truro, Kay was the youngest of six children and known as “Babe” to her five older brothers, Gerald “Jed”, Arthur, Allan, John and Frank. She married the late Ellis Davis in 1947. A graduate of Acadia University in secretarial science, Kay settled in Bridgewater in the early 1950s. After several years in the private sector, she spent 12 years as a teacher of office administration at the Lunenburg Regional Vocational School (now part of the Nova Scotia Community College system) before starting her own home services business. She served three terms as a member of the Bridgewater Town Council before retiring in 1997. Kay and her husband Ellis were deeply involved in the many interests and activities of their children. They were instrumental in the creation of many organizations, including home and school, minor sports and community recreation associations. Kay was a long-time member of the Kiwanis Club of Bluenose Golden K and a Past Lieutenant-Governor. Kay’s volunteer efforts were recognized when she was awarded the provincial Volunteer Award as Bridgewater’s representative volunteer in 1999. Kay is survived by her six loving children and their partners: Jim (Susan Tweedie), Black Point; Ted (Jan Cook), Dartmouth; Carol (Roy Jamieson), Dartmouth; Allan (Tammy Bender), Buffalo NY; Bill, Leduc, AB; Anne (Rob Richardson), Perth, ON. She was the devoted grandmother of Kelly, Ben, Morgan, Matthew and Emily, and great-grandmother of Magnus, Luisa, Esmond and Asher. She is remembered by a loving extended family of nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation with take place Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at Sweeny’s Funeral Home, York Street, Bridgewater. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 1 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, 123 Pleasant Street, Bridgewater, with interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Rev. Gordon MacLean officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the South Shore Regional Hospital, the Bridgewater Senior Wheels Association, or the charity of your choice.
