Obituary of Maurice Eugene DeLory
Maurice Eugene DeLory
1927-2016. Passed away peacefully after a short illness, Thursday March 31, 2016 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater, surrounded by family. Born October 5, 1927 at Georgetown, Prince Edward Island, he was a son of the late Fred and Cecilia (Cullen) DeLory. Educated at Public School, Georgetown, Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, PEI and Dalhousie University, Halifax. Mike often mentioned his most challenging job after graduation was a short stint teaching school in Georgetown, P.E.I. Following his graduation from medical school he did general practice in Annapolis Royal from 1955 to 1960. He began his surgical residency at New London, Connecticut in 1960 and completed his surgical residency at the Victoria General in Halifax in 1964. He practiced general surgery at the Roseway General Hospital in Shelburne, 1964-1965. Mike received his Canadian Fellowship from the Royal College in 1965 and moved to Bridgewater that year where he began his surgical practice at the former Dawson Memorial Hospital and then later moving to the new South Shore Regional Hospital. Following his retirement from South Shore Regional in 1999 he did surgical Locums in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Goose Bay, Labrador. Mike entered provincial politics in 1970 and became the MLA for the Liberal constituency of Lunenburg West until 1978. During his time in office he served as Provincial Secretary, Minister of Lands and Forests, and Minister of Tourism. He negotiated with Northern Scottish Tourist Board for the first Canadian Gathering of the Clans between Scotland and Nova Scotia in 1977. Mike was active in community affairs; he served on the town council in Annapolis Royal, he was a past member of the Bridgewater Industrial Commission, Bridgewater Curling Club, and LaHave River Yacht Club. Mike enjoyed fishing and hunting and his holidays in Georgetown, PEI. Mike and his wife Burdette celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary in August 2015. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and he will long be remembered for his stories and his booming voice. Surviving are his wife, Burdette Berringer (MacInnis) DeLory; daughters, Sheila Ann DeLory, Mahone Bay; Jennifer Lynn (Niels) Kreiberg, Mill Village; sons, Michael Paul (Paula) DeLory, Indiana; Mark Eugene DeLory, Halifax; grandchildren, Samantha (John) Haughn Culloty; Chelsea (Bradley Whynot) Haughn, Morgan Haughn; sisters, Bernice DeLory (Bill Melanson), Georgetown, PEI; Sheila DeLory, Halifax; sister in law, Bev DeLory, Halifax; brothers, Dr. Fred (June) DeLory, John (Doris) DeLory, Cullen “Cully” (Barbara) DeLory, all of Halifax; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Stephen “Ben” DeLory, Richard “Dick” DeLory. Keeping with his personal request, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, April 10 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater.
