Obituary of Lawrence Melbourne Haines
Lawrence Melbourne "Larry" Haines
Passed away on February 6, 2016 at the VG Hospital, Halifax NS, age 80 years. Born in Bridgewater, NS on December 29, 1935, he was the son of the late Bernard and Pauline (Crouse) Haines. He was educated in Bridgewater, NS Nautical Institute, Pier 21, Halifax and Teachers’ College, Truro. In his early years he was employed as a certified auto mechanic in Bridgewater, Halifax and Dartmouth. He later changed careers and went to sea as a Junior Engineer aboard the famous scientific research ship VEMA, Columbia University, New York. He travelled extensively and went around the world many times visiting many countries. During this time he obtained his Third, Second and Chief Engineer’s certifications from Dept. of Transport, Ottawa. His sea career continued as chief engineer of the Coast Guard ships Daring and Tupper, Texaco Chief and Irving Polaire and Aime Gaudreau tankers. He retired from the sea to take up a teaching position at the Nautical Institute, Pier 21, Halifax and later in Port Hawkesbury. He was appointed Head of Engineering in 1989, a position he held until his retirement in 1996. He was an avid photographer and enjoyed wood working and metalwork. He loved the sea and small motorboats. He was a life-long learner, teacher and held a keen interest in the world around him. He will be missed by all who knew him and especially those who loved him. He is survived by a sister Patricia Slauenwhite, Bridgewater; brother Gerald Haines, Halifax and two nephews. He was predeceased by brother Douglas, in infancy. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater. There will be no visitation by request. Memorial service will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday February 12 in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Bridgewater, Rev Simon Davies officiating. Donations can be made to Missions to Seafarers - P.O.
