Obituary of John Frederick Jones

John Frederick Jones, P.Eng Age 82, New Ross, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 26, 2016 in Rosedale Home for Special Care, New Germany. Born, May 13, 1934 in London, Ont.; John was the son of the late John and Evelyn (Knight) Jones. John lost his mother at the early age of 3 when his brother David was born. His father remarried and John was blessed with a beautiful and caring stepmother, Edith and her son, Kelly; a much loved brother to John and David. John’s education included receiving his Bachelor of Science (Hons.) degree in 1957 and his Masters of Science degree in 1961 at the University of Western Ontario. This led him to a full and active life as a groundwater geologist for the Research Council of Alberta in the Peace River District and then to Nova Scotia. He then became the Chief of engineering and groundwater division with the former Nova Scotia Department of Mines. He then became Director of water planning and management division with the Nova Scotia Department of Environment; in this role, John was a responsible for province-wide water resources, evaluation, management and protection. He initiated the first formal groundwater resource program in Atlantic Canada. Before John retired, he was the Senior Policy Advisor to the Deputy Minister of Environment from 1985-1991. He was a guest lecturer in hydrogeology at Dalhousie University, Halifax. John worked hard and played hard. John hung up his suits and ties after his retirement and will be fondly remembered wearing his striped coveralls everywhere. John was predeceased by his parents; step mother, Edith; brother, Dr. David Jones; his partner of 25 years, Dolores Walsh. Bad ole King John will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his step-daughter, Laura (Ryan) Zinck and her son, Dean Hatt. John had two daughters, Kristin and Megan and five grandchildren, Jonathan, Julianne, Matthew, Ellen, Alexander; brother, Dr. Kelly Jones, Ontario. By personal request, there will be no funeral service. No flowers please, donations may be made to the New Ross Volunteer Fire Department.
