Obituary of Carroll Edward Shand
Carroll Edward Shand
Age 91, of Hebbville, Lunenburg County, died at his home on Sunday, January 10, 2016, while resting. Born in Bridgewater on January 23, 1924, the son of the late Fraser and Evelyn (Dean) Shand, he was just short of his 92nd birthday. As a Merchant Mariner aboard the SS Sunset Park during the Second World War and later, he travelled twice around the world. Returning home to Lunenburg County to start his family with Helen, he was employed by several companies and used his accounting skills and equipment knowledge, to provide for his family. Early in the 1960’s he built his family home in Hebbville. His love of the outdoors was large. By car and later truck, by four wheeler, boat or walking there were a lot of roads, back roads, trails and lakes explored for their fishing or hunting possibilities with his buddies. Carroll spent many hours in his garden, vegetables were a passion. There could never be enough leaves or seaweed, which he collected in his travels. He firmly believed that things had a use beyond their original purchase. Many bits and pieces were repurposed to suit his needs in the garden, the yard or around the house. He was a friend to the birds, feeding them untold bags of seeds. “Watching my birds” was often the answer to the question, “what are you doing Dad?” Carroll is survived by his daughter, Madelyn (Peter) Bowers, New Germany; sons, Michael (Sharon) Shand, Allendale and Kirk (Doreen) Shand, Whites Lake; grandchildren, Michael, Adrienne, Erin, Theresa, Emily, Andrew and Brenna and their families including four great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Perry) and sister, Shirley (Sutherland). Visitation will be from from 2 - 5 p.m. at Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater on Friday, January 15. Interment will be in the Hebbville Cemetery at a later date. If you would like to make a memorial donation, Carroll was a supporter of the local Food Bank. Hebbville Cemetery would also appreciate your donation. The family would like to thank Jeanette and Shelley, Veterans Affairs and the other people who helped Dad stay in his home, exactly where he wanted to be. Arrangements entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home, Bridgewater, where on-line condolences may be made by visiting www.sweenysfuneralhome.com or by messaging condolences@sweenysfuneralhome.com.
